International Master's Degree Programme for Research Chemists

The International Master’s Degree Programme for Research Chemists is a degree programme taught in English at the University of Joensuu.

The programme is focused on researcher training in order to meet the ever-growing need for top quality researchers. The objective of the programme is to provide the students with solid theoretical and practical knowledge of chemistry and to promote their skills in working as independent and innovative researchers. The programme also serves as an excellent stepping stone to future PhD studies and it will bring the students into contact with the research community by integrating them into ongoing research projects.

Who should apply?
Graduates who are seeking challenges in the field of chemistry research and who hold a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering.


Scholarships and Sponsorships
All international students who have been admitted to study in the International Master’s Degree for Research Chemists are eligible to receive a scholarship. The scholarships
are worth €500 per month and they will be awarded to all accepted international students.

The possible additional grants will be awarded based on the progress and merits achieved during the programme in Joensuu.

application period for the academic year 2009-2010 begins on 2 February 2009 and closes on 30 April 2009 at 14:00 (2 pm) GMT.

Applicants to the International Master’s Degree Programme for Research Chemists must meet the following requirements:

  • All applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in chemistry or chemical engineering obtained at an internationally recognised and accredited university with:
    at least 75% of the maximum obtainable grade. This can vary depending on
    the grading system of the university having awarded the Bachelor’s degree.
  •  Sufficient knowledge of English (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
    Minimum entry levels:
    Proof of a minimum knowledge of English such as a TOEFL (minimum of PBT 523/ CBT 193/ IBT 69) or an IELTS (minimum of 6) certificate or equivalent certificate of adequate language skills.

The test results should be sent to the University of Joensuu directly by the test administrator. TOEFL code of the University of Joensuu is 8222. If the applicant does not have TOEFL or IELTS certificate she/he might be tested at the nearest Finnish Embassy. The English test is not required from Finnish citizens, if the applicant has taken matriculation examination in English language or his/hers previous Bachelor’s degree includes studies in English.

In 2009, a maximum of 15 students will be accepted to the Masters Degree Programme for Research Chemists.
