Smax Call for Applications: Curatorial Grants

As part of a German-Dutch art project, the Minister President of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia is awarding a 12-month grant to two curators-in-residence at Schloss Ringenberg (from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010).

Eligibility requirements are:

  •  A completed course of studies at a university in North Rhine-Westphalia (master’s degree, diplom, magister or doctorate) in the fields of art history or art studies
  • Profound knowledge of contemporary art and experience with the curatorial process

As a rule, applicants must not be older than 32 years of age when the grant period begins on 1 July 2009.
Schloss Ringenberg is located in Hamminkeln (District of Wesel) on the Lower Rhine. As a centre for young art and project work within the scope of the German-Dutch cultural dialogue, the Schloss provides studio space for eight German and Dutch artist fellows each year, as well as four exhibition galleries with changing programmes.

The monthly allowance is 1,250 euros. This grant is designed to help the recipients cover the cost of living, including their share of the expenses for the apartment and workspace (180 euros/ month). A 12-month lease must be signed with the Derik Baegert Gesellschaft for the apartment and workspace (dated from the 1 July 2009).

Applicants must submit:

  • A curriculum vitae with photo
  • Proof of a degree from a university in NRW
  • Evidence of curating one or more art projects (freelance or, e.g., on a voluntary basis; brief documentation in the form of catalogues, photos, etc.)
  • A sample text from a catalogue or essay on an artist
  • A sample art critique or review (possibly as a fictional commission from a magazine of one’s choice or on an artist or current project)
  • An incisive statement on the candidate’s personal interests and vision of the curatorial process

Application deadline is 15 May 2009.
