2011 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Foreign Students

We are pleased to announce the opening of the 2011 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award - a worldwide competition for outstanding foreign students for PhD study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering for academic year 2011-2012.

The program is funded by the Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of the U.S. Department of State. Approximately 45 awards will be competed worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields.

ELIGIBLE FIELDS: Selected participants will be enrolled for PhD study at top U.S. universities in the following fields: 

1. aeronautics and astronomics/aeronautical engineering
2. agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only) 
3. astronomy/planetary sciences
4. biology
5. biomedical engineering
6. chemistry 
7. computer sciences/engineering
8. energy
9. engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum)
10. environmental science/engineering
11. geology/earth and atmospheric sciences
12. information sciences and systems (engineering focus only)
13. materials science/engineering
14. mathematics
15. neurosciences
16. oceanography
17. public health (theoretical research focus only)
18. physics

FUNDING:

All grantees receive:

• testing vouchers for TOEFL, GRE General and GRE Subject exams
• tuition
• a monthly stipend for up to 36 months
• health and accident coverage
• a book and equipment allowance
• travel support,
• specially tailored enrichment activities
• are eligible to apply for additional research funding and professional conference allowances.

After three years, U.S. universities have agreed to fund the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D. Placement of students will be handled by a Fulbright cooperating agency. However, applicants may indicate placement preference.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Croatian citizenship
2. completed undergraduate degree before August 1, 2011
3. proficiency in English with a recent TOEFL score (or equivalent) of 580 or higher
4. GRE General Exam (quantitative score of at least 700)
5. completed application package (Note, a GRE Subject Exam score report will also be needed for all selected candidates in the following fields of study: biology; biochemistry, cell, and molecular biology; chemistry; computer science; mathematics; and physics.)

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURES:

The competition is open from March 1 to May 2. Each applicant will be required to submit an online application along with all supporting documents.

A complete application includes: 

• an online application which includes:
  • a clearly written research objective
  • a professional resume
• three letters of reference (submitted electronically and attached to the online application or official paper copies sent by mail)
• official (or scanned and attached to the online application) academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended 
• English language proficiency test scores (when available)
• GRE General and GRE subject exam test scores (when available)

Once submitted, U.S. Embassy Zagreb will review applications, interview and nominate 2 principal and 1 alternate finalists. Approved applications will then be forwarded to a U.S-based screening committee and the U.S. Foreign Scholarship Board for review and approval.

All applications, including references, undergo technical and academic reviews. Finalists will be notified of their status by October 15, 2010.

COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKAGE INCLUDES:

• complete and mail printed copy of the on-line application, 3 letters of reference (on special Fulbright forms), and all supplemental forms
• undergraduate (and graduate if applicable) academic transcripts (in Croatian only)
• copy of university diploma(s) if already received (in Croatian only)
• copy of domovnica
