The Master of Public Policy Programme

Through its Master of Public Policy (MPP) programme, the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance in Berlin offers unique opportunities to develop and concretely implement groundbreaking solutions to today’s world’s greatest challenges.

The two-year programme is intellectually challenging, practically applicable and highly participatory. Designing, communicating, and setting socially significant projects into motion are the critical skills that this program imparts to its students. Only taken in combination, do these valuable skills provide the successes that socially engaged goals deserve.

The HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance

The HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance is a joint project between the Humboldt University in Berlin and the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). It is led by Gesine Schwan, Stephan Breidenbach and Alexander Blankenagel, and supported and guided by (among others) Peter Eigen, founder of Transparency International, former German Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, and Kofi Anan, former General Secretary of the United Nations.

A unique combination of research, instruction, and discussion in the areas of politics, business, and civil society exists here at the School. In an increasingly complex global society influenced by many distinct interests, effective problem-solving does not only demand entrepreneurial qualities and high professionalism; it also requires the energy that exists in credible, democratic, value-oriented endeavours, such as what exists in the School’s idea of ‘good governance.’

Therefore, the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance and its guiding principles stand for: “Thinking. Acting. Achieving.”

The individual political projects with which students apply to the School of Governance are central aspects of the programme. With individualized support from the School and through exchanges with one another, students develop solutions and come to realise their political projects in practice. Through these projects, students in the MPP programme are able to bring the knowledge, and in particular the skills they gain from their presence-seminars, to life.

The Students and their Projects

The students come from many different countries and represent all areas of politics, business and civil society. They have an excellent completion of their first university degree and have had at least two years of experience working since finishing university. They are fluent in English and German, and preferably a third language, as well.
And they have an idea for a unique political project: concrete challenges, issues or activities in their own institution or organisation to be worked through during their studies. Applicants will be individually supported in finding and selecting a project idea.

The Application

The application consists of a resume, proof and certificate of the student’s university degree completion and, most importantly, a description of the political project that the student wishes to undertake during her studies.

A selection committee will review these materials following their submission. At the end-stage of the application process, applicants will be invited to an interview.

Tuition and Financing

The tuition costs are 4,500 Euro per semester. The HUMBOLDT-UNIVERSITY School of Governance offers flexible options for financing these costs, in addition to various scholarship possibilities.
