The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) provides scholarships to the Program in Economic Policy Management.

These awards cover tuition, administrative fees, and required medical insurance; a monthly stipend to cover living expenses during both the on-campus study period and the internship period; and travel expenses from the participant's home country to New York and back.

1.Elibigle candidates:

To be eligible to receive a JJ/WBGSP scholarship to the Program in Economic Policy Management, applicants must be accepted into the program and must also satisfy the following World Bank conditions:

  • They must be a national of a World Bank member country that is currently eligible to borrow.
  • They must be in good health and of good character.
  • They must be under 45 years of age.
  • They must hold at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
  • They must have at least two (preferably four to five) years of recent, full-time professional experience in a field related to economic development, usually in their home country, and usually in public service.

Executive directors, their alternates, and staff of the World Bank Group (the World Bank, International Finance Cooperation, and Inter-national Development Association), as well as consultants and their close relatives are not eligible for JJ/WBGSP scholarships.

Scholarship recipients will not be eligible for employment with the World Bank or IMF for three years after completion of the program.

Other Selection Criteria

While all eligible applicants will be considered, JJ/WBGSP gives priority to:

  • Applicants with at least four to five years of work experience.
  • Applicants with few other resources and from lower social and economic classes.
  • Applicants who have had no previous opportunities for graduate study outside their home country.
  • Applicants whose work experience has predominantly been in the public sector.

All materials required to apply for JJ/WBGSP scholarships are included with the Columbia application for admission to the Program in Economic Policy Management.

Applicants need not be eligible for or receive JJ/WBGSP scholarships to be admitted to the Program in Economic Policy Management. Because it is possible to be admitted to the program without receiving a JJ/WBGSP scholarship, it is in the interest of all applicants so seek alternative financial support for attendance in the program. In the past, students have received partial or complete financial support from the African Development Bank, the Fulbright Foundation, the Organization of American States, the United Nations Development Programme, and agencies and ministries in which the students are employed.
