2012 ROLEX AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE

RULES AND CONDITIONS
1. Description
The Rolex Awards for Enterprise aim to encourage a spirit of enterprise in individuals around the world by supporting outstanding efforts in areas that advance human knowledge and well-being. The Rolex Awards provide financial assistance to people who want to implement concrete working projects. Applicants must submit projects that are envisaged for the future or that have been completed only in part. Completed work, or projects that will be finished when the Awards are presented late in 2012, cannot be considered.
2. The Jury
Laureates of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise are chosen by an independent Jury from among a shortlist of projects established by Rolex SA. The 2012 Jury will comprise experts of international renown from a range of disciplines, as well as a representative of Rolex SA. This panel has sole responsibility for choosing the Laureates. The Jury’s decisions are final and are not subject to appeal. Moreover, its procedures and deliberations are confidential and will not be disclosed.
3. Areas of Recognition
The 2012 Jury invites applications for projects that fall into the following areas: science and health; applied technology; exploration and discovery; the environment; and cultural heritage. Projects must expand knowledge of our world, improve the quality of life on the planet or contribute to the betterment of humankind.
4. Selection Criteria
In judging applications, the 2012 Jury will determine primarily whether the candidates show exceptional spirit of enterprise. Projects are also judged on the basis of their originality and potential impact on the world and on society. Finally, the Jury will consider the extent to which a Rolex Award will contribute to the advancement of the project. The application of the selection criteria will be at the sole discretion of the Jury.
5. Prizes
The Jury will choose five Laureates, who will each receive USD 100,000 and a Rolex chronometer. The Laureates will be honoured at an awards ceremony late in 2012 as guests of Rolex SA. The Jury may grant other prizes to applicants worthy of support. The amount of these prizes will be determined at the discretion of the Jury. No alternatives to the non-cash prizes will be given.
6. Applications
In order to be considered, pre-applications as well as full applications must:

  • be in English,
  • be complete, with all sections filled in,
  • be signed,
  • be submitted by the deadline indicated at the time of applying.

The latest deadline for pre-applications will be May 31, 2011. The latest deadline for full applications will be June 30, 2011. Candidates may submit additional material if they are invited to submit a full Official Application Form, and these supporting materials may be in languages other than English. Enclosures must arrive with the application. If the application form is submitted through the Rolex Awards for Enterprise website, all enclosures must arrive before the deadline given to the candidate. No supplementary information will be accepted after receipt of the project, except if specifically requested. No applications will be returned after the close of the awards. All applications will remain at the Secretariat of the Rolex Awards and will be destroyed at the end of 2012, except the winning applications.
7. Eligibility
Applications may be submitted by individuals only. Only one individual may appear on each application form. No institutional or collective applications are allowed. If a project represents the efforts of several individuals, one person must represent the group and sign the application form. Should such a group effort be chosen, the Rolex Award will be presented to the individual representative. Rolex SA will have no obligation to any other members of the group. Applicants must submit their own ideas and proposals. If an applicant is working within an institution, the full amount of the award will go to the applicant only.
