ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

1. In short

The ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship Program supports incoming fellowships for postdoctoral researchers at the ETH Zurich. The program is intended to foster high-potential, young researchers who have already demonstrated excellence in terms of internationally competitive achievements in the early stages of their professional careers.

Applications have to be made jointly by the candidate and their host who must be an ETH Zurich Professor and who will act as a mentor of the fellow.

The duration of an ETH Fellowship is between one year and a maximum of two years.

Given the limited number of Fellowships available in a given year, it is clear that being designated an ETH Fellow is an honor and the result of a highly competitive process. It is assumed that ETH Fellows are primarily interested in following an academic career.

2. Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must have been awarded a doctoral degree within two years of the submission deadline from an institution other than the ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich.
  • At the time of the relevant submission deadline, researchers must also not have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) at either of the two institutions for more than six months.
  • Applicants need to have at least one scientific publication in a peer-reviewed journal or have been awarded a prize for their PhD thesis.
  • Applications not complying with these rules will be rejected on formal grounds.

3. Application

Applications are to be made jointly by the candidate and their prospective mentor who must be an ETH Professor.

The mentor must have a guaranteed ETH position for the entire duration of the proposed fellowship.

The application needs to include:

  • a description of the project(s) in which the ETH Fellow would be involved and their specific role, as well as the way in which the ETH Fellow’s project relates to other research directions in the host group (max 5pp)
  • a letter by the host professor, stating why the candidate is deemed to be excellent
  • a brief outline of the career goals of the candidate (1p)
  • a complete CV of the candidate and a 2pp CV of the host professor, including lists of publications
  • at least two external letters of reference for the candidate, to be emailed directly by the referees to the Office of Research

Applications should be submitted electronically using the dedicated on-line system.

Information on the submission procedure is provided in the detailed submission instructions and on the ETH Fellows Help Page.

Submission deadlines are March 1 and September 1.

4. Evaluation

The evaluation consists of two steps. In a first step, the submitted application will be evaluated by peer review. In a second step, the best candidates will be invited to an interview with the Research Commission of the ETH Zurich.

The interview will take place at the ETH Zurich and lasts 20 minutes. Candidates are requested to be available on all the dates indicated below for a given submission deadline until they have been assigned a specific interview date; preferences for a specific date cannot be considered.

Deadline                              Interview dates

September 1, 2011            Nov 10, Nov 11 and Nov 16, 2011

Within six to eight weeks of the submission deadline, the candidates will be informed whether they are invited to an interview.

Applicants who have passed the first evaluation step will be informed within approx. 4 months of the submission deadline, if their application for an ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship has been successful or not.
