The Intern Teacher Program provides volunteer teaching assistants to serve as models of language and culture in US schools at all levels, from preschool through university. Interns can be assigned to a school for up to twelve months. Interns assist in the classroom for up to 20 hours per week, take personal study classes and live with American Host Families.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
In order to qualify as an Amity Intern Teacher all applicants must be:
- Between the ages of 20 and 30
- Single with no children
- Currently enrolled in/completed higher education
- Enthusiastic about sharing language and culture with US students
INTERN TEACHING SCHEDULE
Interns
1. Work in their school for up to 20 hours a week:
including preparation time
including a maximum of 3 hours of administrative work
excluding staff meetings and special events
2. Are provided a Supervising Teacher to act as a
mentor
3. Play a flexible role, commonly including:
Assisting the teacher in the classroom/co-teaching
Providing conversation practice with groups/individuals
Giving cultural presentations
Modeling pronunciation
Participating in extracurricular activities related to
language/culture
Developing materials for language practice
4. May teach independently if mutually agreed upon
by the Host School, the Intern and Amity Institute
during the invitation process
5. Must be compensated at the standard rate for
additional hours (up to a maximum of 10 hours per
week) PERSONAL STUDY CLASSES
Interns
***Take one or two personal study classes, depending on
assignment length (One must address a topic in American
Studies)
***Classes are mandatory, but must not interfere with the
teaching schedule
***Do not need to take classes for credit or complete all
coursework for grades
***Receive a Certificate of Studies at the end of the
assignment, awarding university-level credits for: Intern
Teaching (three credits), Conversational English,
American Studies, ***Education in America (one credit
each)
***May use these credits for fulfilling study/ internship
abroad requirements with universities in their home
country, if permitted
***Take classes free of charge, by Host School arrangement
HOST FAMILY LIFE
Interns:
- Receive room and board free of charge from the Host Family
- Have a private bedroom in the home
- Often live with multiple families during the course of an
assignment, but should not be moved more than once
every quarter (nine weeks)
- Actively participate in family life and household chores
- Are responsible for all additional living expenses
- Are responsible for own transportation during free time
COSTS FOR AN AMITY INTERN TEACHER
Assignment fee (non-refundable) - US $50

Round-trip airline ticket - Varies by location and season
Health insurance coverage -US $70 per month

HOW TO APPLY
To apply to the Intern Teacher Program, you must complete the Intern Teacher Application materials and contact an Amity Screening Officer in your home country to conduct an interview. In most cases, interviews are granted year-round.
Email interns@amity.org to get information on your international representative. Amity will not accept applications unless the candidate has met with an Amity Screening Officer.
