2012 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Foreign Students

We are pleased to announce the opening of the 2012 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award - a worldwide competition for outstanding foreign students for PhD study at top U.S. universities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) beginning in fall 2012 for academic year 2012-2013.

The program is funded by the Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of the U.S. Department of State. Approximately 40 awards will be granted worldwide for candidates who demonstrate high aptitude and potential for innovation in scientific fields.

ELIGIBLE FIELDS:

Selected participants will be enrolled for PhD study at top U.S. universities in the following 18 fields:

  1. aeronautics and aeronautical engineering
  2. agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only)
  3. astronomy/planetary sciences
  4. biology
  5. biomedical engineering
  6. chemistry
  7. computer sciences/engineering 
  8. energy
  9. engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, industrial, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum)
  10. environmental science/engineering (theoretical or science research-based focus only)
  11. geology/earth and atmospheric sciences
  12. information sciences and systems (engineering focus only)
  13. materials science/engineering
  14. mathematics
  15. neurosciences
  16. oceanography
  17. public health (biostatistics or epidemiology)
  18. physics

(Please note: This award is for applicants wishing to pursue theoretical and research-based study in STEM areas. Policy or social science research such as, environmental or health management, energy policy, research pertaining to analysis of health systems, etc., will not be considered. FUNDING:

All grantees receive testing vouchers for TOEFL, GRE General and GRE Subject exams, tuition, a monthly stipend that covers room, board, and incidental expenses for up to three years, health and accident coverage, and a book and equipment allowance.

Participants also receive roundtrip travel and are eligible to apply for up to $10,000 in supplemental allowances for research funding and professional domestic and international conference attendance.

After three years, U.S. universities either fully fund or work with the grantee to identify funding options (such as scholarships or a teaching assistantship) for Ph.D. degree completion. Participants also take part in traditional Fulbright enrichment activities (Gateway Orientations and Enrichment Seminars), as well as the annual Fulbright Science and Technology Conference available exclusively for Fulbright Science and Technology Fellows. In the final year of their grant, participants attend the Fulbright Science and Technology Capstone Seminar in Washington, DC.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Croatian citizenship (applicants must not be living in the U.S. at the time of application)
  • completed undergraduate degree before August 1, 2012
  • proficiency in English with a recent TOEFL score (or equivalent) of 580 or higher or IELTS score of 6.5 or higher
  • GRE General and/or GRE Subject Exam
  • completed online application package

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURES:

The competition is open from March 1 to May 1, 2011. Each applicant will be required to submit an online International Fulbright Science and Technology Application which is located at https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/international

The completed online application includes:

  • a clearly written study and research objective
  • a clearly written personal statement
  • a professional resume
  • a minimum of two letters of recommendation (three preferred) – they must be submitted electronically and attached to the online application or official paper copies sent by mail
  • official (or scanned and attached to the online application) ranscripts for all post-secondary study attempted (they do not need to be translated into English)
  • English Proficiency Measure (when available): TOEFL or IELTS examinee score reports for tests taken within two years of July 2011 (can be scanned into the online application)
  • GRE General and GRE subject exam test scores taken within two years of July 2011 (when available)

Once submitted, U.S. Embassy Zagreb will review applications, interview and nominate up to 3 finalists. Approved applications will then be forwarded to a U.S-based screening committee and the U.S. Foreign Scholarship Board for review and approval.
All applications, including references, undergo technical and academic reviews. Finalists will be notified of their status by September 16, 2011.

COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKAGE INCLUDES:

  • complete and mail printed copy of the on-line application (as above) with all supplemental forms
  • undergraduate (and graduate if applicable) academic transcripts (in Croatian only)
  • copy of university diploma(s) if already received (in Croatian only)
  • copy of domovnica
