PhD Studies in the Heart of Germany 2011
International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research (IMPRS-HLR)

Overview
Heart, vascular and lung diseases represent the highest socioeconomic burden of all diseases worldwide, with multiple interactions and several unresolved treatment
challenges. In ageing societies the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases will further increase.

  • The International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research has evolved from a joint cooperative of the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and the Goethe University in Frankfurt.
  • The International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research off ers outstanding training for young scientists and physicians in all areas of heart and lung research. The principle concept of the school refl ects the fact that research in basic and medical sciences has often followed diff erent routes and traditions with ineffi cient cross-fertilization between both disciplines.
  • The International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research provides a common training ground for basic researchers and physicians.
Our goal is to make basic-research scientists familiar with patient-orientated scientifi c approach in the face of demands for innovative diagnostics and
therapies (Translational Research). Physicians will gain access to intensive training in natural sciences to enhance understanding of comprehensive systematic work.

Graduate Program
The graduate program is designed as a three-year program. All students will attend an orientation phase before entering the graduate phase. Aim of the orientation phase is to provide the basis for a successful graduation. Orientation phase includes lab rotations, scientifi c seminars and methods courses on the state-of-the-art techniques established at the institute. In addition, advice is given on managing everyday life in Germany including bank account, resident permit, health insurance, etc.

The graduate phase includes regular scientifi c seminars. Courses in scientifi c writing and carrier opportunities will be off ered as well as German language courses. Annual
retreats will help deepening scientifi c knowledge and improve exchange between IMPRS-students.
