Open positions User-Centered Information Technology of possible interest: Open positions in UCIT (Graduate School in User-Centered Information Technology)

UCIT has opened a call for 9 funded 4-year positions for doctoral students from the beginning of 2006.

UCIT is a multi-disciplinary Graduate School in User-Centered Information Technology. It is based in Tampere, Finland, where it is a joint undertaking of three departments of the University of Tampere, and three institutes of the Tampere University of Technology. Application Categories
Applications for funded positions at UCIT can only be submitted at separately announced dates. Information on the currently open call is given below.

Students that do not request funding from UCIT can apply any time. They should follow the application procedure described below as applicable.

Students applying for a position at UCIT are expected to accept the policies of UCIT.

Application Procedure
The deadline is October 31st, 2005. The applications must be received on or before that date. Applications that are not received by the deadline are not taken into consideration. The applicants must have a Master's degree in a field covered by UCIT, and demonstrate a good capacity for advanced studies. It is also possible to apply even if the Master's degree has not been completed but is near completion.

The applications should be submitted in eight copies (original and seven copies). They should be addressed to the Board of UCIT and contain (in Finnish, Swedish or English) the following items:

  1. The application form properly filled in.
  2. Curriculum Vitae, including a list of publications.
  3. A research plan.
  4. A listing of courses taken after obtaining a Master's degree. 
  5. A letter of introduction in which the applicant states his/her research interests, which unit and/or research group the applicant is interested in, the reasons for pursuing graduate studies at UCIT, and career objectives in the field of user-centered information technology.
  6. A financing plan, indicating whether funding from UCIT is desired. 
  7. Two reference letters.

In addition, the following documents must be submitted (but a single copy of these is sufficient):

  1. Officially confirmed copies of all relevant diplomas (with an officially confirmed English translation, if the original is not in Finnish, Swedish or English).
  2. For foreign applicants who don't speak English as their mother tongue, an official certificate of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or other proof of language proficiency.

The applications are submitted to the Registrar's office:

Applications will not be accepted by electronic mail or fax, although additional information can be supplied in this way.

Based on the applications, the Board of UCIT can invite promising applicants to give a presentation and a short interview. Applications will not be returned.

Deadline of applications is October 31, 2005.

Students wishing to join UCIT but with secured funding from other sources can apply continuously.
