Postdoctoral Researchers Scholarships-Giessen University
Giessen University, Germany

Date: three-year structured PhD-programme

Deadline: March 1st 2012

Open to: candidates with a PhD in the arts/humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences

Giessen University's International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. Based on a 10-year experience in supporting excellent young researchers at the beginning of their career, the GCSC plans to systematically expand its research and qualification programme for researchers with a PhD in cultural studies or related areas on their way to a junior professorship or comparable positions.

The GCSC invites applications for up to 3 posts for postdoctoral researchers as

Research Team Members
(subject to funding available; otherwise: scholarships)

Positions are available from October 1st (resp. Nov 1st) 2012. Appointees fulfilling the requirements outlined in the Hessian Collective Labour Agreement will be remunerated according to pay grade 13 TV-H (full-time; 100%).

The positions are subject to approval of resources applied for in the second funding period of the German Federal Excellence Initiative; alternatively, the GCSC will award postdoctoral scholarships. Please indicate in your online application whether you would also be interested in taking up a scholarship. Positions (resp. scholarships) are tenable for one year and can be renewed for up to three years.

Appointees are expected to

  • research a postdoctoral project that contributes to the GCSC’s research profile and that can be mentored at Justus Liebig University
  • contribute to one of the research teams allocated to the GCSC’s research areas*: initiate, coordinate and document collaborative research projects, such as conferences or publications
  • become active in the mentoring and qualification programme for PhD candidates

The GCSC offers postdocs a research-intensive environment and many opportunities to shape research at the centre through individual and collaborative research projects. Moreover, we aim to develop a tailor-made qualification programme for postdocs on their way to junior professorships or comparable positions. We invite appointees to become actively involved in designing the programme in accordance with their specific needs. The GCSC Teaching Centre offers systematic qualification in HE teaching; opportunities to teach at the BA level are available.

Your profile: Candidates applying for a postdoctoral position should hold a PhD in the arts/humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences, have an excellent academic record, and pursue a research project relevant to the GCSC’s research areas. Fluency in either English or German is required. Acceptance of a position requires active participation in the GCSC research programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC. Appointees are expected to take up residence in or near Giessen.

We invite applications contributing to the study of culture in various historical contexts as well as those analysing contemporary phenomena. An international research perspective and experience in conducting research internationally are very welcome.

Justus Liebig University Giessen strives to achieve a gender balance in research. For this reason, qualified female researchers are encouraged to apply. Justus Liebig University Giessen is a family-friendly university. Candidates with children are invited to apply. Eligible disabled candidates will be favoured.

Applications close March 1st 2012. All applications (including an application form and further documents as stated on the GCSC-website) have to be submitted online.
