2012 Summer Seminar in Conflict and Peace Studies
Athens, Greece

Since the summer of 2002, Olympia has been hosting, with growing success, an annual international graduate summer program in comparative politics and international relations. Thanks to the collaboration of Greek universities with Yale University´s Program on Order, Conflict and Violence, the hospitality of the city of Ancient Olympia, and the generosity of Greek foundations, the Olympia Summer Seminars bring together every year a highly diverse and talented group of graduate students, professionals, and professors from more than 30 countries from around the world. The purpose of the seminars is to create a forum for high quality academic work in the unique setting of Olympia, and to provide opportunities for the creation and consolidation of scholarly networks of cooperation.

The Olympia Summer Seminars are organized by the Navarino Network, a public policy initiative based in Thessaloniki, Greece, with the support of numerous universities and foundations, including Yale University, the University of Macedonia, the Institute of International Relations at Panteion University of Athens, and several European Research Consortia, i.e. Microcon in 2008 and 2010 and TAMNEAC in 2012. The Seminars have been generously sponsored by the A. G. Leventis Foundation, and, in the past, by the National Bank of Greece and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece.

Due to high demand, the 2012 program will offer four cycles of studies. The application is competitive. Tuition charges cover only part of the total cost of the program since OSS is generously supported by several sponsors. A number of scholarships are offered on the basis of merit and need.2012

Courses

Fees

There is a 150-euro non-refundable registration fee to be paid in advance of the seminar to secure a place, in accordance with the instructions provided in the letter of admission. Those wishing to attend two cycles (either Cycle B and Cycle C, or Cycle B and Cycle D) do not have to pay the registration fee twice.

Tuition and board charges are for

  • Cycle A: 900 euros,
  • Cycle B: 390 euros,
  • Cycle C: 390 euros, and
  • Cycle D: 390 euros.

These tuition and board charges are IN ADDITION to the registration fee and cover:

  • shared hotel accommodation in a double occupancy room,
  • breakfast, light lunch and full dinner,
  • electronic access to all the reading material,
  • excursions, cultural and social activities and extra curricular activities including a guided tour of the Olympia Archeological site and
  • transportation from “Athens International Airport” to Olympia and back.

A single room can be provided at an additional charge of 35 euros per night.

A limited number of scholarships for the tuition and board charges are available and will be awarded on a merit and need basis. Nonetheless, we also encourage students to search for outside funding to cover their fees and/or travel expenses, by exploring funding opportunities available through their home universities and local non-governmental organizations.

All participants are expected to pay for their own travel to and from Athens.
