PhD Studentship in Communications Systems

Deadline: 01.04.2006.

Scholarship administrator: University of Wales, Bangor
Level: postgraduate
Field of study: Engineering
Place of study: United Kingdom

UK: PhD Studentship in Communications Systems, University of Wales

Applications are invited for a PhD research studentship in Communications Systems at School of Informatics, University of Wales, Bangor.

The project will start from 1 April 2006.

The aim of the project is to investigate a recently proposed novel signal modulation technique and its performance in multimode fibre-based Ethernet transmission links. Both theoretical and experimental work will be undertaken to develop transceiver modems using the proposed modulation technique and to demonstrate experimentally the optimised system performance of the modems. The successful completion of the project will lead to the generation of a comprehensive design methodology for the practical realization of the novel transceiver modems, which have great potential for providing a cost-effective, high speed solution with excellent flexibility and robustness for upgrading installed 1Gb/s Ethernet backbones to 10Gb/s and above.

Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree (or its equivalent) in physics , electronics or applied mathematics. A good knowledge of communications systems, signal modulation techniques and electrical digital signal processing would be highly advantageous.
