The IMAT Program
 

The Institute for Applied Material Flow Management (IfaS), Environmental-Campus Birkenfeld (ECB), University of Applied Sciences Trier (Hochschule Trier), Germany and its Japanese partner university, the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) are offering the German-Japanese Dual Masters Program in International Material Flow Management (IMAT Japan). Successful graduates are awarded with two internationally accredited Masters degrees:

  • M.Sc. in International Cooperation Policy from APU and
  • M.Eng. in International Material Flow Management from Hochschule Trier.

IMAT Japan features multidisciplinary study courses aiming at educating young professionals in "green business opportunities" through system efficiency strategies. The innovative program facilitates holistic business and technology management strategies through a combination of engineering, economics, environmental, social and cultural sciences.
The practical approach of IMAT Japan challenges the students with developing projects and eco-entrepreneurial business ideas and collecting relevant, practical experience through close cooperation with small and medium sized enterprises.
Successful IMAT graduates will be endowed with:

  • Theory and practice of international material flow management (MFM),
  • Better understanding of eco-system management and economic aspects of environmental protection,
  • Systemic understanding of various clean technologies and technology management,
  • Knowledge on intercultural communication, networking, project management, financing and fundraising,
  • Knowledge on German business culture,
  • International case studies and practical project experience,
  • Graduation thesis about practical issues with professional guidance at international companies or research institutes.

Duration: 2 years (1 year at the APU in Japan, followed by 1 semester at the ECB in Germany and 1 master thesis semester)
Tuition Fee: 2,800,000 JPY (4 semesters)
Program Fee: 400,000 JPY (4 semesters)

Scholarships
There are 2 DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarships available for the FS 2013 intake for international students covering

  • living expenses: 750 EUR/month for the 1st and 2nd study semester in Japan (FS 2013 and SS 2014; Sept. 2012 - July 2013),
  • flight costs to Japan: lump-sum (the exact amount depends on the country of origin of the respective applicant),
  • tuition fee reduction: up to 100% depending on the evaluation of the academic and non-academic performance of the respective applicant; in addition, beneficiaries will receive a lump-sum of 1,250 € (approx. 163,000 JPY)/ semester for the 1st and 2nd study semester in Japan (FS 2013 and SS 2014) for covering parts of the remaining tuition fee after evaluation.

The scholarships might be prolonged for the 3rd and 4th study semester in Germany (FS 2014 and SS 2015) depending on the excellent academic performance of the beneficiaries during the 1st and 2nd study semester in Japan as well as on DAAD approval.
