Post-Doc Position in Database Systems and Data Analysis
Humboldt-Universität, Berlin, Germany

Announcement follows

Post-Doc Position in Database Systems and Data Analysis at
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Physics Department
Chair of Solid State Theory, Prof. Dr. Claudia Draxl

We are looking for an expert (post doc) in database software and data-analysis tools, leading the IT activities of a novel project of materials discovery base on a materials database that needs to be designed and maintained. Identification and characterization of new and novel materials that potentially exhibit a technological performance at a hitherto unexpected level is developing a new branch in materials science and engineering. It is now possible to perform fully parameter-free calculations, starting from many-electron quantum mechanics, to scan thousands of known and yet unknown materials.

Indeed, science based on so obtained numerous data on physical properties, which may be technologically highly relevant, is significantly different to what has been done so far in materials science and engineering.

For this new type of materials research, installing, developing, and advancing data-base software and novel data-analysis tools are at the very heart of the success of project. The holder of the announced position should lead this challenging task. We may learn, for example, from science at CERN and the Human Genome Project. The initial focus of the project will be on thermoelectric materials suitable for recovering waste heat, as produced in any machine – from laptops to automotive combustion engines. The position is, however, embedded into a larger activity that involves the groups of Claudia Draxl (Humboldt Universität zu Berlin), Matthias Scheffler (Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin), Klaus-Robert Müller (Technische Universität Berlin) and other groups worldwide, e.g., at MIT, EPFL Lausanne, Duke University, or University of California Santa Barbara.

The applicant should have a PhD degree in Computer Science with emphasis on Database Systems, Data Mining, or Data Analysis.

Applicants should contact Prof. Claudia Draxl per Email
(claudia.draxl@physik.hu-berlin.de) until May 17, 2013, referring to code number DR/052/13. Employment within this project is possible up to three years.
