Open PhD positions at Simula Research Laboratory

Deadline: 03.03.2006.

Scholarship administrator: Simula Research Laboratory
Level: doctoral
Field of study: Natural Sciences, Engineering
Place of study: Norway

Three open PhD positions at the Department of Scientific Computing

The Department of Scientific Computing develops numerical methods and software for the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). Such equations are vital ingredients in mathematical modeling of physical processes. Simulations based on mathematical models play an important role in research and industry, and studies of increasingly complex processes lead to a strongly growing demand for efficient methods and robust, flexible software.

In connection to two of our research projects there are three PhD positions open from April 1, 2006.
Applicants must have completed their master-level education (MSc, Cand. Scient, Siv. Ing.) within June 2006. They must also fulfill the requirements for acceptance to the PhD program at the University of Oslo. For all the open positions we look for candidates with documented background in numerical solution of PDEs and implementation of simulation software.
Computational Geosciences The Computational Geosciences project has two open PhD positions. Applicants must have documented knowledge of at least one of the following fields: Continuum Mechanics, Physics, Geology, or Geophysics. The PhD projects will address two different topics:

Coupled heat transfer, fluid flow, and deformation in porous media
Simulation models for deposition of sediments
Contact: Professor Are Magnus Bruaset (arem@simula.no)

Cardiac ComputationsThe Cardiac Computations project has one open PhD position. Applicants must have documented knowledge of at least one of the following fields: Continuum Mechanics, Biophysics, or Biology. The topic of the PhD project will be modeling and simulation of mechanical activity in the heart.
Contact: Research Director Joakim Sundnes (sundnes@simula.no)

Interested candidates for the positions should email their application letter and CV to Kristin Børte (krisbor@simula.no).

Application deadline: March 3, 2006
