The Astronomy Group in the School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences offers six PhD studentships for students starting September 2014. School Postgraduate Studentships are open to UK and EU students. Applicants should hold or expect to hold, a UK first class honours degree, or a good UK Masters degree or equivalent non-UK qualification, in a relevant subject. The application deadline is 9th February 2014.

Eligibility:
-Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a UK first class honours degree or a good UK Masters degree or equivalent non-UK qualification, in a relevant subject. If you are unsure about the equivalence of your qualifications, contact us on phd-at-physics.sussex.ac.uk
-The two STFC awards are available for UK students. Some EU students may be eligible.
-The EU-funded award is available to UK and EU students.
-School Postgraduate Studentships are open to UK and EU students. Exceptionally, overseas students can be considered, but higher fees are payable due to UK government requirements. We are unable to fund the additional fees ourselves. Overseas applicants must state how they propose to fund the additional fees. Fees for Overseas students in 2013-14 were £16200 per year, UK/EU fees (waived by the award) were £3900 per year. For 2014-15, fees are likely to rise approximately in line with UK inflation.

Scholarship Open for International Students: The students of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom can apply for these scholarships.

Scholarship Description: The Astronomy Group in the School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences has six PhD studentships available for students starting September 2014. Two STFC-funded awards on any research topic supported by the Astronomy group. One EU-funded award with the Infrared Astronomy team. Three School Postgraduate Studentships, one each with Dr Mark Sargent, Dr Robert E Smith, and Dr Stephen Wilkins on topics agreed with the supervisor. Applicants may propose research topics, or request consideration for the topics published on the Astronomy Group.

Number of award(s): Six Scholarships will be offered.

Duration of award(s): Scholarships will be offered for 3.5 years.

What does it cover? Total offer is of £13726 per annum plus UK/EU fees waived for 3.5 years.

Notification: Interviews are likely to be held in the period 5 – 19 March. Interviews may be held over internet phone if necessary. Informal offers will be made in late March and formal offers of admission in April.
