Fully-Funded PhD Studentship for UK/EU Students in UK, 2014

University of York is offering fully-funded PhD studentship for UK/EU students. Studentship is awarded for a project entitled “evaluating the role of protein dynamics in double-stranded RNA recognition”. The studentship is part of an interdisciplinary training network that encompasses 6 research groups across the White Rose universities (York, Sheffield and Leeds). The project will be initiated in October 2014 in the University of York. The second phase of the project will take place at the University of Sheffield. The application deadline is 28 February 2014.

Study Subject(s): Studentship is awarded for a project entitled “evaluating the role of protein dynamics in double-stranded RNA recognition”.
Course Level: Studentship is available for undertaking a PhD research project.
Scholarship Provider: University of York, UK
Scholarship can be taken at: UK (University of York and University of Sheffield)

Eligibility: The studentship is only open to UK/EU students.

Scholarship Open for International Students: UK/EU students can apply for this PhD studentship.

Scholarship Description: Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) features in many cellular processes, including RNA interference and the innate immune response to viral infection. Interactions between dsRNA and protein factors are fundamental to such processes. This project will explore the structural and molecular mechanisms underpinning recognition of dsRNA by multi-domain dsRNA-binding proteins. We will apply an integrated biophysical approach, utilizing techniques such as isothermal titration calorimetry and microscale thermophoresis to characterize protein/RNA interactions, and NMR spectroscopy to explore the role of protein dynamics in dsRNA recognition. The results of these studies will shed light on the mechanisms of dsRNA selection in processes such as microRNA biogenesis and viral dsRNA sensing. The project will be initiated in October 2014 in the University of York where the student will generate protein and dsRNA samples and use biophysical approaches to characterize protein/dsRNA interactions. The second phase of the project will take place at the University of Sheffield where the student will explore the contribution of protein dynamics to dsRNA recognition.
