PhD Position in Data Management, University of Copenhagen

Deadline: 15 March 2014
Open to: master graduates (or equivalent) in computer science or computer engineering possessing detailed knowledge of low-level systems architecture and operating systems
Scholarship: starting salaries are about 25,000 DKK (Euro 3,330) per month for Ph.D. students

Description

One scholarship for a PhD project is available within the field of data-management, with a special focus on managing data from multimodal imaging in material-science. The aim of this project is to design, and implement an end-to-end data-storage solution for managing large datasets obtained from multiple imaging sources that are physically distributed across all of Europe. The system should consider data acquisition, archiving, physical distance between user and storage, and preferably energy consumption. The successful project will provide a deep integration with the imaging equipment and hide the data-management complexities from the end-users entirely.

Eligibility

The successful applicant should have master degree (or equivalent) in computer science or computer engineering, or have completed four years of such a master’s degree. Detailed knowledge of low-level systems architecture and operating systems is a requirement. Documented experience with large scale computing for science, especially physics, is a plus.

It is a requirement that the candidate is able to participate in teaching activities at the Niels Bohr Institute. You must be able to speak and write English, and in general work in an English language environment. As a person you should be both self-managed and able to work within a large cross-disciplinary team, which includes computer scientists, physicists, chemists and industrial.

Scholarship

Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Currently, starting salaries are about 25,000 DKK (Euro 3,330) per month for Ph.D. students – plus full benefits including pension.

Application

Applications are only accepted electronically. Please describe your research interests and make sure to include the following information:

  • CV, including details on any relevant expertise and experience;
  • An official record of exam results;
  • Names and contact information on preferably three scientific referees.
  • Language test results are not required at the time of application, but may be required at a later point.

Questions about the project can be directed to Professor Brian Vinter vinter@nbi.ku.dk. Application deadline is 15 March 2014.
