Apply for Admission (International Students)

Email is the primary method of communication between International Student Services and international applicants. Please be sure to include a valid email address on the completed application in order to receive timely reminders and updates.
All the documents must be original or copies certified by the source institution (i.e., high school, examination council, etc.) or the EducationUSA educational advising center sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

A permanent address outside the United States is required of all applicants.

Be sure to note the deadlines:

  • June 1 for admission for the end of August
  • November 1 for admission for the end of January

Step 1: Complete and Sign International Application Forms

Step 2: Submit $40.00 USD non-refundable application fee
Paid by credit card, check or money order made payable to "SUNY APC." Please, do not send cash.

Step 3: Send Academic Records
Original or certified copies of academic transcripts, mark sheets, grade reports, diplomas or certificates, national standardized examination results, or other academic course work are required. Photocopied or scanned copies are not acceptable as official documents.
Include a certified English translation for all documents not written in English.
Transcripts submitted for admission become the property of SUNY Plattsburgh and cannot be returned to you or sent to another college or university.

Step 4: Provide evidence of English Language Proficiency
ONLY ONE of the following documents indicating the level of English proficiency for those applicants whose native language is not English must be provided:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
ACT
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Ordinary-level examination results
West African Education Council examination results
Caribbean Examination Council examination results
Certificate of completion of ELS Language Center program with a level of 112
A TOEFL score of 540 (paper-based) or 207 (computer-based) or higher will enable you to be considered for admission directly into university-level academic programs. A TOEFL score between 450 and 539 paper-based (or between 133 and 203 computer-based) would enable you to enroll in our English Bridge Program.

Step 5: Provide Financial Guarantee
In compliance with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations, all international applicants must provide evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies. Therefore, we require a current bank statement (dated within the past six months) on bank letterhead, with the name of the account holder and currency clearly indicated in English. An Affidavit of Support cannot be used in place of a bank statement.
If the family name (surname) of the account holder on the financial statement is different from your own, you will need to provide a letter written in English from that individual stating his or her relationship to you and intention to financially support your education.
Step 6: Submit Autobiographical Essay
One to two pages telling us about yourself, your interests, your future plans and reasons for wanting to attend SUNY Plattsburgh.

International Transfer Students
Any international applicant who has completed academic studies at another college or university may be considered for transfer admission to SUNY Plattsburgh. The minimum standards for admission as a transfer student are:

Completion of at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours of academic credit at a regionally accredited college or university.
Cumulative grade point average of 2.3 or better.
Students with less than 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours of academic credit will be considered for admission based on a review of their college/university transcript(s), as well as secondary school records.
