Germany: Degussa Foundation Scholarship Awards

The award of scholarships for the upcoming generation of scientists represents a key area of the financial assistance provided by the Degussa Foundation: Financial assistance will be given to applicants studying for a master's degree at universities, colleges and technical colleges, and for doctoral and postdoctoral projects. Postgraduate studies and internships abroad can also be considered. In these instances the Degussa Foundation concentrates on providing financial assistance for students pursuing various programs of study in the natural sciences, especially the chemical sciences. Go on reference page to see a summary of these programs of study and those which in general cannot be funded.

Yearly funding priorities for scholarship awards
The funds that the Degussa Foundation has available each year for awarding scholarships and for financing projects is provided solely by the income it receives from its invested capital. Consequently, each year the foundation concentrates on selected funding priorities

Award criteria
Financial assistance can only be given to applicants who are not in a position to adequately finance the education in the sciences that they are seeking to pursue out of their own funds, or through allowances provided by parents or other parties, and where there are no more state grants and government aid available.

All applicants must be able to demonstrate higher than average ability and achievements during their studies in order to show that there are good reasons for believing the program of study will be successfully completed. This means that financial assistance generally cannot begin until the foundation is able to assess the achievements of the applicant - for longer programs of study this would normally be after completion of the bachelor's degree.

The duration and scope of the scholarships awarded will depend on the particular research project in each case. Normally, the following duration/scope can be expected:

Master's degree: six months, 250 - 400 €/month
Semesters abroad: six months, 400 - 600 €/month
Doctorates: one year (may optionally be extended), 700 - 950 €/month
Post-doctoral studies: one year, 1000 - 1500 €/month

The award of a scholarship does not entitle the recipient to have funding extended. However, in individual cases this may be a possibility.

Scholarship awards for artists
Scholarships for selected artists and for particularly committed and talented young people are awarded on an individual application basis as part of financial assistance provided for education and vocational training (especially further education and training programs) (see also "Guidelines for Applications").

Closing dates for applications
The Degussa Foundation sets specific closing dates for applications for scholarships and would like to thank all applicants whose scholarship applications we received by March 31, 2006. As we already have a great number of very good and interesting applications to evaluate, there will be no further closing date this year.

Please note, that applications will only be accepted for the next closing date on March 31, 2007.

Obligations on all scholarship recipients
All Degussa Foundation scholarship recipients must use the funding exclusively for their studies or their further training and education. Moreover, recipients should be able to demonstrate good results within an appropriate period time.

Financial assistance can only be continued if the recipient voluntarily summits a written report at the end of each stage of funding (usually every six months), or by a date agreed with the foundation's management. The report will focus on the stage of the program of study or further training just completed, and will include any evidence of achievements, appraisals by lecturers and teachers, and the likely duration of the rest of the study or training period.

The scholarship recipient must notify the Degussa Foundation immediately if his or her financial situation changes or if the focus of the program of studies or further training alters.

Once the program of study has finished, recipients will also submit a final report to the foundation, along with a copy of the examination certificates, master's degree thesis or doctoral dissertation.

Scholarship recipients have no other obligations to the Degussa Foundation or Degussa AG.
