The Doctor of Musical Arts

The Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program is the most advanced course of study offered at The Juilliard School. Admission to this program is limited to the most gifted and accomplished musicians who also possess a broad range of knowledge about music, a keen intellect, a natural curiosity for a wide variety of disciplines, and the potential for pursuing high level performance, scholarly, and teaching careers.

The C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellows Program, made possible by the Starr Foundation, allows candidates accepted into the D.M.A. degree to pursue their resident studies on a full-tuition scholarship basis.

Doctoral candidates intending to graduate in May 2007 must, on or before December 15, 2006, declare their intention to graduate by filing a graduation intent form with the Registrar. That form must be countersigned by Catherine Hoffman in the Office of the Dean before being returned to the Registrar.

Final drafts of doctoral documents and composers' essays must be submitted to the candidate's advisor by November 1, and to the Office of the Dean by December 1, 2006. Composers' compositions must be submitted on or before January 31, 2007.

The final draft documents and composers' essays will be returned to candidates with reader comments and requests for changes on or before January 31, 2007; compositions will be returned to composers on or before March 30, 2007.
