Fully-funded PhD Studentship in Early Modern English Literature

University of Geneva

The English Department of the University of Geneva is seeking to make an appointment for a fully-funded PhD studentship in early modern English literature for a period of five years, starting in September or October 2007.

Duties
The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s first-year teaching and, in addition, will be given the opportunity to teach BA seminars on topics in early modern English literature. The usual teaching load is no more than two or three hours per week. The successful candidate may also be asked to help with administrative work in the Department.

PhD
The successful candidate will register as a PhD student in Geneva and will be supervised by Prof. Lukas Erne, the author of Shakespeare as Literary Dramatist (Cambridge UP, 2003) and Beyond ‘The Spanish Tragedy’: A Study of the Works of Thomas Kyd (Manchester UP, 2001), and the editor (with M. J. Kidnie) of Textual Performances: The Modern Reproduction of Shakespeare’s Drama (Cambridge UP, 2004) and The First Quarto of Romeo and Juliet (Cambridge UP, 2007).

Salary
The salary starts at CHF 39,015 (ca. £16,600) in the first year and increases on an annual basis, reaching CHF 66,887 (ca. £28,500) in the last year.

Conditions
Candidates need to have an MA by the time they start work in Geneva. Some knowledge of French may constitute an advantage, though it is not indispensable as all business in the English Department, including all interaction with students, is conducted in English.

Application
Candidates are asked to submit a curriculum vitae, a sample writing passage, a concise PhD project (no more than one page) and the names of one or two referees (no references should be sent at this point).
