International Summer School - Take Attitude, Stop Discrimination!
Sibiu, Romania

20 students from Romania and 10 from other European countries - undergraduate, MA, and PhD students in socio-political studies - are invited to take part in a summer school to take place between 2 and 8 July in Sibiu, the 2007 European Capital of Culture. The focus of the summer school will be the study of European anti-discrimination policies and institutions, in the context of promoting human rights internationally.

The programme is organised by the Department for Inter-Ethnic Relations of the Romanian Government with substantial funding from the European Commission.

Maximum age of the applicants is 26; they will be undergraduates (preferably in their final years), MA and PhD students in socio- political studies. Additionally, they will be active in a non-governmental organisation promoting human rights, equal opportunities, and fundamental European values.

We have invited lecturers with a strong background in human rights and anti-discrimination from important European universities. The summer school will comprise theoretical approaches to human rights,
case studies, training sessions on human rights theory, international human rights law and institutions, the relationship between human rights, mass-media and civil society, as well as anti-
discrimination European policies and institutions. At the end of the summer school we have planed a study-visit to central Transylvania, where participants will get the chance to see a positive, centuries- long model of inter-ethnic co-habitation.

Working language will be English. Certificates of participation will be awarded at the end of the course.

Organizers will cover all expenses related to accommodation, meals, and study visits. For students from outside Romania, international
travel will also be covered. Participants from Romania will be asked to cover their expenses to and from Sibiu.

Deadline for submitting the applications is 15 April.

The application pack consists of the following:

  1. page CV;
  2. a letter of intention which will address the following issues:
    1. the reason why you wish to take part in this summer school; please mention any specific topics you are particularly interested in
    2. how you intend to put into practice the information you will receive during the course.
