The Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg

Shaping change

The Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg of the Robert Bosch Foundation supports young people who want to contribute to shaping their environment as volunteers and to understand change in their societies as an opportunity to reflect their own needs, search for companions and gain new experiences. We offer them training, international encounters and the support of their own, personally developed project.

Being active through project work

Our programme has a simple basic idea: young people can be motivated to become voluntarily involved if you let them work independently, support them in the development of their skills and help them wherever needed. The Heuss-Kolleg has developed a method to implement this: fellows work on a personally developed, temporary limited and manageable project. We believe projects to be a good learning environment. On the one hand, creativity is needed, such as with the development of the project concept; structural thinking, on the other hand, is enhanced through the creation of a project proposal and the coordination of, in many cases, multinational projects. Each day, the fellows have to face new challenges; they are the best “teachers“ for the young people. A professional structure, with qualified seminar leaders and an international network, accompanies the fellows through the programme and mentorship.

International summer seminars

Every year, at the beginning of the programme, 100 fellows are invited to 2-week summer seminars. In an international group, fellows acquire knowledge about socio-political topics, and have the opportunity to sample intercultural communication in practice. Fellows of the Heuss-Kolleg receive authentic information about society in foreign countries, share experiences of commitment in civil society, and receive inspiration for their own involvement. Individual project ideas are developed at the end of the summer seminars.

Putting ideas into practice

In the second stage of the programme, ideas become concepts. The best of them are financed by a scholarship of the Robert Bosch Foundation. Consulting mentors, project meetings and training help the young project teams with the implementation of their ideas. The range of projects is as diverse as the fellows of each year. An overview of the scope of projects can be found on the Heuss-Kolleg website. Project teams begin their work with the adoption of the project proposal in the fall of 2006, and end it with a wrap-up seminar in July 2007.

Qualification and education

Project work opens new perspectives for personal and career development, while an international network of contacts prompts a look beyond one’s own nose. Carrying out a personal project also means developing social competence and organisational skills. Fellows are invited to project meetings, training sessions and a wrap-up seminar.

Application

All those aged between 18 and 25 years at the time of the summer seminars may apply for participation at the Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg until March of the same year. Further information is available, in German language, on the website of the Heuss-Kolleg.
