Visiting Research Fellowships 2008-2010

Applications are invited for Visiting Research Fellowships of between two and six months, tenable in the period: June 2008 - September 2010. No limitation is placed on the area of research within the Humanities and Social Sciences but priority will be given to those whose work falls within the scope of one of the Institute's current Research Themes:

  • Life Writing, Testimony and Self-Construction
  • Institutions and Oppositions of Enlightenment
  • The Humanities in the Twenty-First Century University
  • Translations, Adaptations and Modalities (details to be announced shortly) - from June 2008
  • Theory in Practice - from January 2009

The Institute is housed in an 18th century courtyard close to the University Library and about 20 scholars are in residence at any time. Fellows are allocated a private office in the Institute with all the usual research facilities and are expected to play a full part in the activities of the Institute. They are also encouraged to develop their contacts with colleagues within the College of Humanities and Social Science. They give at least one seminar on their current research work during their tenure. The Fellowships are not funded.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 29 February 2008. Applications received after that date will not be considered. Successful candidates will be notified by email by 18 April 2008 with a formal letter of confirmation to follow; please ensure that you supply a valid email address so that you can be contacted quickly after decisions are made.

References

A minimum of two and a maximum of three references are required. Applicants should ask their referees to write in confidence directly to the Institute Director at the address above or by email to iash@ed.ac.uk  by 29 February 2008. At least one referee should come from outside the institution of the applicant. Referees should comment on the nature and quality of the research proposal, as well as on the qualifications of the applicant.
