PhD in Computer Science/Federated Query Processing
Galway, Ireland

Announcement follows

The extension of the Internet into the physical world (Internet of Things) requires the integration of Web, database, distributed systems, and networking research with new paradigms like semantic web and linked data. The sheer size and dynamics of the data in IoT applications poses novel and unique challenges, which we plan to investigate in the following years. We are looking for a PhD student
to work in the area of federated query processing. In particular we want to address the challenges of data discovery and efficiently executing queries across a number of heterogeneous sources.

Requirements:

  • Completed degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or similar, with outstanding performance (Master, or equivalent)
  • Experience with implementation work in C++ or Java
  • Personal initiative, creativity and ability to effectively work in a team
  • Good level of written and spoken English

Knowledge of large-scale distributed information systems, stream databases, management of time-dependant information, stream query processing systems, semantic web technologies and linked open data are assets but not a must. Candidates are requested to submit a cover letter, an academic curriculum vitae, and the names of 3 references to hr.ie@deri.org quoting "PhD Position - Federated query processing" in the subject of the mail. Applications from non-native English speakers should also include copies of their GRE, TOEFL, CPE or similar scores if available.
