Description

Central European University’s Roma Access Programs unit is accepting applications for its Roma Graduate Preparation Program (formerly called the Roma Access Program). The Roma Graduate Preparation Program is an intensive 9-month program that prepares promising Roma youth to compete for places of study in English-language Master’s degree programs at CEU and other recognized universities. RGPP seeks to attract students with a special interest in the social sciences and humanities. RGPP is funded by VELUX Foundations and other external donors.

RGPP’s academic year runs from September 2013 till middle of June 2014. This is a full-time program, students are expected to be in Budapest for the duration of all the semesters.
 

Financial Aid

All successful applicants will be awarded full scholarships for the entire period of the program. The financial aid covers travel to and from Budapest, tuition and fees, accommodation in the CEU Residence Center, health insurance, study materials, and living expenses.

The program offers to its participants the following:

  • Prepares students for further studies in their chosen field through intensive academic tutoring classes in disciplines such as Economics, Gender Studies, History, International Relations and European Studies, Law/Human Rights, Nationalism, Political Science, Public Policy and Public Administration, or Sociology (additional disciplines may be offered)
  • Raises their English to a level necessary for post-graduate study through intensive English language training
  • Trains them in post-graduate level academic writing and study skills
  • Involves them in the core degree programs of CEU, by auditing CEU Master’s level classes
  • Engages students in critical debates regarding the political, economic and social condition and status of Roma through seminars that combine the study of history and identity with recent developments in the politics of governing Roma communities in the region

Central European University (CEU) is an English-language, graduate university offering degrees in social sciences and humanities, located in Budapest, Hungary. Students come from over 110 countries and our faculty from more than 30. CEU is accredited both in the United States and in Hungary.
 

Eligibility

RGPP accepts young Roma applicants from the countries of Southeastern & Central Europe and the former Soviet Union. These countries include Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, and Ukraine, who have:

  • A university degree, preferably in the Social Sciences or the Humanities, completed by July 2013
  • A strong interest in post-graduate university education
  • At least pre-intermediate English language skills
  • A desire to study in a multicultural and international environment
  • An ambition to become a role model in their communities and beyond

Your application must include the following:

  • Completed Application Form (in English) (attachment)
  • CV (in English), including academic background, work experience, if any, and involvement in Roma related issues, if any.
  • Letter of Intention (in English), stating why you would like to participate in this program. Describe your academic and professional achievements, interests and plans for the future; also write about your involvement in Roma issues. Specifically, reflect on the ways in which you intend to serve as a role model for your community in the future
  • Official scanned copy or photocopy of your diploma or certificate of enrollment confirming that you graduated or will graduate from university by July 2013 (in your native language, if possible with English translation)
  • Official scanned copy or photocopy of your transcript (document showing courses taken and grades received during all your university years) (in your native language, if possible with English translation)
  • One Reference Letter from a university professor or your employer. The letter should be in English, but if not possible we also accept letters written in local languages. A suggested template to be used can be found in attachment The applicant is encouraged to share this template with the writer of the letter of reference.
  • In addition, it is strongly recommended to have a second Reference Letter from a recognized Roma organization. The letter should be in English, but if not possible they also accept letters written in local languages.
