PhD Studentships in Social Sciences at Cardiff University in UK, 2014



The Cardiff School of Social Sciences, supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre for Wales (Wales DTC) invites applications to a number of fully-funded PhD studentships for the 2014/15 academic year. Total 11 studentships are available in the areas of Criminology, Education, Science and Technology Studies, Social Policy, Social Work and Social Care and Sociology. Studentship covers tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant; the award includes an additional Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of £750 for three years for full-time students. The application deadline is 28th February 2014.

Eligibility:
 

  • Academic Criteria: ESRC studentships are highly competitive, candidates should have an excellent academic background in the social sciences, holding a 1st or strong upper 2nd class degree; applications from those also holding a Masters degree (preferably an ESRC recognised Masters or an equivalent background in research training) will be considered for a +3 award.
  • Residency Criteria: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education. EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees-only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.


Scholarship Open for International Students: The students of UK/EU (Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia (Slovak Republic), Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, Vatican City) can apply for the Studentships.


Scholarship Description: The Cardiff School of Social Sciences, supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre for Wales (Wales DTC) invites applications to a number of fully-funded PhD studentships for the 2014/15 academic year. We have up to 11 fully-funded PhD Studentships available and the School expects to make doctoral studentship awards in the areas of Criminology, Education, Science and Technology Studies, Social Policy, Social Work and Social Care and Sociology.

Number of award(s): 11 fully-funded PhD Studentships will be offered.

Duration of award(s): Studentships will be offered for three years.

What does it cover? This studentship is generously funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. It covers full UK/EU tuition fees and includes a Doctoral Stipend matching the UK Research Council National Minimum (£13,726 p.a. for 2013/14, updated each year). There is also a research training and support grant of £750 p.a. to support research activities such as conference attendance, fieldwork or a travel allowance.

Selection criteria: Application forms will be assessed by the Director of Graduate Studies and relevant academic staff in the School, following which short-listed applicants will be invited to interview.

Notification: Successful applicants can expect to hear by the end of April.

  • A Covering letter and CV - Please send in a covering letter outlining your interest in the studentships and what makes you a suitable candidate. This should be no more than 2 pages. Please also specify whether you wish to apply on a +3 or 1+3 basis. You will also need to submit a CV with this.
