PhD Scholarship at University of Auckland in New Zealand

School of Chemical Sciences, University of Auckland is funding PhD scholarship in New Zealand. Applicants should have a BSc (Hons) or MSc degree in Chemistry or a related subject. PhD scholarship start date is Feb 2014. The scholarship comes with an annual stipend of NZ$25,000 per annum for three years and in addition the PhD tuition fees are covered by the scholarship.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Australian/ New Zealand and International students are eligible for this PhD scholarship.

Scholarship Description: Carbon-hydrogen (C–H) bonds are the most common, but least reactive in organic molecules. C–H functionalization is a reaction that selectively modifies these otherwise inert C–H bonds. Considering the high abundance of C–H bonds in organic molecules, their direct, selective conversion to a C–C, C–O or C–N bond (amongst others) offers a powerful method to add valuable complexity to a compound without resorting to functional group transformations, opening up several new directions for chemical synthesis in the 21st century. This PhD project will examine the synthesis of heteroaromatic motifs with relevance in natural products and medicinal chemistry using novel C-H functionalization reactions.

Duration of award(s): The length of scholarship is three years.
