PhD Research Fellowship in Paleomagnetism at University of Oslo in Norway

University of Oslo is offering a three year PhD research fellowship in paleomagnetism at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics, CEED. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g. first class Honours degree) in geology, geophysics or physics. The successful candidate will work in the area of paleomagnetism and plate tectonic modelling, and the candidate should have research experience in experimental and/or field work. The application deadline is 1 May, 2014.

Study Subject (s): Fellowship is awarded in the field of paleomagnetism at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics, CEED, University of Oslo. The PhD student will be involved in field sampling of LIPs (including the Oslo Rift) worldwide, laboratory work (in our new geomagnetic national facility), data analysis and paleogeographic modelling.
Course Level: Fellowship is available for pursuing PhD research programme at University of Oslo in Norway.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g. first class Honours degree) in geology, geophysics or physics. The successful candidate will work in the area of paleomagnetism and plate tectonic modelling and the candidate should have research experience in experimental and/or field work. Programming and modelling experience is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Norwegian and Non-Norwegian applicants can apply for this research fellowship.

Scholarship Description: University of OsloEarth is the only terrestrial planet with both plate tectonics and a strong, largely dipolar magnetic field. Palaeomagnetism is the study of the Earth’s ancient magnetic field through the record of remanent magnetism preserved in rocks. Paleomagnetism has been, and remains the chief quantitative tool in deciphering the past location of lithospheric plates and paleogeography, and more lately in linking surface volcanism with plumes from the deep mantle. The main goal of the PhD project is to obtain high-quality paleomagnetic data from large igneous provinces (LIPs) in Europe, Australia and Africa, refine global Paleozoic and Mesozoic paleogeographic models based on these data, and to explore the causal relationship between LIPs and global environmental/climatic changes. The PhD student will be involved in field sampling of LIPs (including the Oslo Rift) worldwide, laboratory work (in our new geomagnetic national facility), data analysis and paleogeographic modelling.

Number of award(s): One research fellowship will be awarded.

Duration of award(s): This research fellowship is awarded for a period of three years.

What does it cover? Pay grade is 50-57 (421 100 – 473 400 per year) depending on qualifications.

Selection Criteria: The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Online Application: The mode of applying is online. The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and this application must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. The application must include:
-Application letter
-CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work – scientific publications)
-Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records and letters of recommendation
-List of publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee
-Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)
-The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system EasyCruit from the link on the bottom of the page. Non-Norwegian applicants should provide an explanation of their University’s grading system. Please remember that all documents must be in English or a Scandinavian language.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline is 1 May, 2014.
