Description

The Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB) is a newly established research centre, which is funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, a charity with a long tradition in promoting outstanding research in medicine, biology, chemistry and pharmaceutical science.

The International PhD Programme on the “Dynamics of Gene Regulation, Epigenetics and DNA Damage Response” gives talented and enthusiastic students the opportunity to undertake PhD research at the cutting edge of modern biology. IMB’s groups cover a broad range of expertise and include leading biochemists, geneticists, cell and developmental biologists who study the molecular mechanisms of embryonic development, ageing and disease; bioinformaticians and systems biologists who analyse high-throughput datasets and model regulatory gene networks; and applied physicists who develop ground breaking super-resolution microscopes. This range of expertise and the open and vibrant atmosphere within the Programme encourages multidisciplinary collaborations and innovative research. Moreover, a range of scientific and social events are organised to ensure high levels of exchange and collaboration between the participating groups.

The Programme is coordinated by the Institute of Molecular Biology in Mainz, Germany, and participating groups are located at the:

Funding for the International PhD Programme comes from the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and as a Fellow of this programme your research will be overseen by an expert Thesis Advisory Committee who will be there to support you in your research and provide you with advice as to how you should proceed. This programme thus provides an excellent opportunity to interact closely with a number of top scientists during the course of your study.

As a fellow of IMB’s International PhD Programme, your PhD research will be conducted within the lab of one of the participating groups. The Group Leader in whose lab you are based will act as your mentor and provide advice and guidance to ensure that you receive training in both the scientific skills and the creative and critical thinking abilities that you will need for your research and personal development as a scientist.

In addition to supervision by your Group Leader, Fellows of the International PhD Programme will meet regularly with a Thesis Advisory Committee of leading scientists who will be there to support and advise you in your research. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to interact closely with a number of top scientists during the course of their study.

All IMB’s PhD students receive generous, fully funded, fellowships for a period of three years (with the possibility for extension).
