With 23 faculties and three art academies and established in the year 1919, the University of Ljubljana is the oldest and largest higher education and scientific research institution in Slovenia. The University promotes basic, applied and developmental research, achieves excellence and the highest quality as well as the highest ethical criteria in all scientific fields and art. We have the largest selection of study programmes, extending into all disciplinary fields, and more than half of all the students in Slovenia. The University member schools are responsible for carrying out undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as lifelong learning programmes. The University of Ljubljana also carries out its developmental pedagogical and research activities. The University of Ljubljana received the StudyPortals award for international student satisfaction in the year 2014.

With 23 faculties and three art academies and established in the year 1919, the University of Ljubljana is the oldest and largest higher education and scientific research institution in Slovenia. The University promotes basic, applied and developmental research, achieves excellence and the highest quality as well as the highest ethical criteria in all scientific fields and art. We have the largest selection of study programmes, extending into all disciplinary fields, and more than half of all the students in Slovenia. The University member schools are responsible for carrying out undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as lifelong learning programmes. 

Doctoral studies at The University of Ljubljana are organized within its Doctoral School, established in 2007. It supports the interdisciplinary approach of doctoral studies, inter-faculty ties and collaboration with other research institutions and individual researchers in Slovenia and abroad. It is the largest research organization in the Republic of Slovenia. Its share of researchers at the Slovenian Research Agency accounts for over 32% of all registered researchers in the country.

The University of Ljubljana also carries out its developmental pedagogical and research activity within the framework of European programmes CIP, Intelligent Energy for Europe, ERASMUS+; TEMPUS, SAfer Internet Plus, COST, EUREKA, LIFE+, HEALTH, COST, Culture, 7th EU Framework Programme for research and development etc. University is a member of numerous international networks like: UNICA, Utrecht Network, IRUN, EUA, EU2S2, CEI .

It runs an ongoing student exchange with over 500 universities in Europe and in the region of Southern and Eastern Europe. The university also cooperates with more than a hundred universities across Europe and America, based on bilateral agreements and our membership in international networks.

University of Ljubljana was in 2011-2012 among the best hundred European universities ranked at the 10th place in terms of the number of outgoing students and at the 14th place for the number of incoming students.

  • Students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering won on the international competition in the construction of a remote-controlled airplanes Design / Build / Fly (USA, 2015).
  • The team of students of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical reached third place at the international competition Freshhh 2015, which was organized by MOL Group, a leading international oil and gas company.
  • The team of the Faculty of Law (after last year's team victory) won again at the regional competition on knowledge of the law of the European Union in Central and East European Moot Court (CEEMC), held between 1-st and 4-rd May 2015 in Tbilisi, Georgia.
  • Industrial designer and lecturer at the Department for Industrial Design of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design received the gold award in the Lighting Products and Lighting Projects Design category for the product 55 LED Lamp on A’ Design Award and Competition (2015).
  • Student of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science took second, third and sixth place at the international conference Computing and Cardiology 2014. The competition challenge was to develop algorithms for robust detection of heartbeats in the simultaneously filmed physiological signals.
  • The University of Ljubljana received the Study-Portals award for international student satisfac-tion in the year 2014. The award resulted from the analysis of several thousand evaluations by international students who rated their satisfaction with study through the STeXX.eu portal, the largest database of international student experiences in the world.
  • Slovenian team CubeSensors won on competition Hardware Battlefield in 2014.
  • Students from Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering became world's champions in the virtual steelmaking in the year 2012/2013 (7th Virtual Steelmaking Challenge).

  • 3446 researchers registered at the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS).
  • In 2014, we published 2045 articles in journals with the WoS (Web of Science) citation index.
  • We managed to publish as many as five scientific articles in the international journals Nature and Science, while the five most quoted articles by University of Ljubljana authors had been quoted as many as 1565 times by the end of 2014.
  • In the last ten years, 16,188 copyright articles by the University of Ljubljana researchers were published. During this period, they have been cited 150,000 times, which is above the international average.
  • In 2014, we participated in 156 research programmes, 79 applied projects, 219 basic projects, 49 targeted research programmes and 12 scientific meetings.
  • In the year 2014, we acquired 96 international projects that lasted more than one year and 27 international projects that lasted less than one year. We participated in a total of 437 different ongoing European projects, including 97 FP7 projects, Horizon 2020 and 295 projects in other European programmes.

Well-known alumni who studied at HEI:

  • Jure Gantar, Professor of Theatre Studies at Dalhousie University (Canada), in 2009/10 and 2015/16 Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at this university, holds BA and MA degrees in dramaturgy from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television. 
  • Marjetica Potr, artist, professor of social design at the Hochschule fr bildende Knste in Hamburg and Tobias Putrih, sculptor, both regularly exhibit in major galleries of the world and participate in important exhibitions and Nika Zupanc, industrial designer, designs furniture and lighting for international firms Moooi, Moroso, Nodus and S, participates in the global design events, have graduated, the first two completed their Master's Degree as well at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana.
  • Maja Ravnikar is cofounder of high-tech company Biosistemika d. o. o. and head of Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology at National Institute of Biology. She received Morrison Rogosa award from American Society of Microbiology, graduated and received her Ph.D from Biotehnical University of Ljubljana.
  • Danica Purg, holder of four honorary degrees, listed on the international scale of modern gurus of management development, Sandi eko, a founder and co-owner of a successful Slovenian multinational corporation "Studio Moderna", Igor E. Bergant, a longtime prominent journalist at Slovenian national TV broadcaster and a host of a late night current affairs show "Odmevi" (Echoes), all graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences.
  • Ms Alea Kandus, director of the company Medex d. o. o., a leading producer of natural food supplements in Slovenia and Europe, and Dr. Uro Merc, the founder and director general of the company Bisol Group d. o. o., one of the most successful European companies in the field of photovoltaics and solar power systems, are successful graduates of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
  • Prof. Uro Urleb, MPharm, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer at Sandoz, the second largest generic pharmaceutical company in the world, Vojmir Urlep, MPharm, MSci,  President of the Board of Management of Lek d.d., which is a key development competence centre of Sandoz and Ale Rotar, MPharm, PhD, Director of Research and Development and member of the Board of Management of Krka d.d., one of the leading generic pharmaceutical companies in Europe, are all graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
  • Zoran Stani is working in the European Commission in domains of science and information society as Deputy Director General. From 2000-2004 he was State Secretary for Science. He graduated in 1986 at Department of geodesy, PhD in 1992 at the University of Ljubljana.
  • Dr. Botjan Kobe, PhD degree from the University of Texas, employed as Professor of Structural Biology at the University of Queensland, Australia, and dr. Andrej ali, PhD from Birkbeck College, University of London, UK, who developed the MODELLER program for comparative modelling of protein structures, received their BSc degrees from the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana. Dr. Alenka Luzar, professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, received her Ph.D. degree in chemistry.
  • Jernej Barbi, associate professor of computer science, University of Southern California, recipient of Sloan, MIT TR35, Okawa, National Science Fundation Career awards, graduated at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. Mirjam Cveti Langberg Professor of Physics at the University of Pennsylvania, elected member of the EASA, recipient of a number of awards in US and Europe; graduated at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana (1979), and received PhD from the University of Maryland (1984).
  • Dr. Andrej Androjna, Staff Officer Plans&Policy (J5) in the International structure of the Slovenian Armed Forces abroad at the Allied Command Operations, Mons, Belgium, completed his PhD at the  Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport. Egon Bandelj, President of the Management Board of Splona plovba, d.o.o., Portoro, graduated from the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport. Dragomir Mati, President of the Management Board of Luke Koper, d.d.,  graduated from the  Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport.
  • Prominent graduates of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science at University of Ljubljana are Jure Leskovec, assistant professor at Stanford University, and Iza and Samo Login, founders of successful international company Outfit7, that created a well-recognized brand Talking Friends. Iza Login also obtained a master’s degree in computer and information science.
  • Mr. Ivan Kralj is the manager and the majority owner of the company Arex d. o. o., entjernej. He graduated at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Professor Matija Tuma graduated at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and has completed his Ph.D. at the University ETH in Zrich. He laid the foundations for the development of thermoenergetics. Dr. Marjan Poganik is the manager and the majority owner of the company Iskra Mehanizmi, Lipnica. He has completed his Ph.D. at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Janez mitek, who was coach in different Slovenian ski clubs and coach of Slovenian Ski National teams as well as project manager and consultant of development departments of the companies Elan, Rossignol Alpina graduated at the Faculty of Sport, University of Ljubljana.
  • Prof. dr. Renata Salecl (1962), philosopher and sociologist, a Research Fellow at the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, and Janez Orenik (1935), Professor of Comparative Germanic Linguistics and Professor of General Linguistics, Member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (Salzburg/Vienna) graduated and completed their doctoral studies at the Faculty of Arts.

4. Information relevant to international students:

Slovenia is a small European country that stretches over an area of 20.273 km2 between the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonia Plain and has a lot of natural attractions.  Slovenia shares land borders with Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia. The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana. Slovenia has ensured the high quality of education, social environment and safety. Official language is Slovenian, in ethnically mixed areas also Hungarian and Italian. Climate in Slovenia is Alpine, Continental and Mediterranean. Currency is Euro (EUR). Basic living costs (for students) are approximately 500,00 EUR per month (accommodation, food, public transport, books).

Basic education in Slovenia is compulsory and is publicly funded. The education sistem is organized mainly as a public service rendered by public and private institutions and private providers holding a concession who implement officially recognised or accredited programmes. Higher education is organized at public and private universities and independent higher education institutions. Higher education is organized in three Bologna cycles (higher professional and academic undergraduate bachelor study programmes, postgraduate master’s study programmes, doctoral study programmes).
