Beautifully located in Tromsø, which is a city situated on the coast of Northern Norway, you find the Faculty of Law, UiT the Arctic University of Norway and K.G Jebsen research Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS). We offer a unique Master of Laws program with pure focus on the Law of the Sea in the context of Arctic legal perspectives and issues. There are no tuition fees!

Law of the Sea
The oceans cover over 70 percent of the surface of the Earth. Human depend on the oceans for life, work, food, travel, and human health. The ocean is the world's greatest reservoir of biodiversity, including marine mammals, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and countless of other species.

The Master of Laws in Law of the Sea program aims to broaden the traditional approach to the Law of the Sea from jurisdictional issues to also include substantial law such as conservation and sustainable use of biological resources and protection of biodiversity and the environment. Although the program has a clear global profile, it has also a distinct Arctic dimension. Much of the Arctic consists of marine areas. Global climate change will increasingly subject these areas to various uses such as navigation, oil and gas exploitation, fisheries and research. The Arctic regions provide unique opportunities for studying both global and regional legal approaches to protect and preserve the marine environment.

Educational setting
The research community at UiT The Arctic University of Norway is a world leader in marine Arctic issues, including Natural Sciences, History, Political Science and Law. Located close to the University is also Norways central governmental institution for scientific research, mapping and environmental monitoring in the Arctic and the Antarctic.

At the Faculty of Law the JCLOS, has quickly established itself as a worldwide leader in Law of the Sea research. Students at the Master of Laws in Law of the Sea program are therefore included in the environment of experts in this field of research.
