Undergraduate: American University, Washington, D.C.

For the fall 2008 academic year, scholarships for first-year students will range from $5,000 to $30,000 per academic year (up to 60 percent of overall cost of attendance). These funds are renewable for all four years of study, based on successful continued academic performance. Scholarship awards for transfer students range from $6,000-$15,000 per academic year and are renewable for two years of study, based on successful continued academic performance.

American University's merit scholarships for international students are partial, not full, awards. They are based on academic achievement and leadership potential, and are not based on need. Scholarship consideration is very competitive and the number of awards available is limited.

Total cost for the 2008-2009 academic year (tuition, fees, room, meals, books, health insurance and personal expenses) is estimated at $46,387, subject to increase.

No additional application is required; all applicants are automatically considered for scholarships upon review of their completed application. First-year applicants will be notified of any scholarship award with their admission letter, while transfer applicants will be notified shortly after they receive an admissions offer.

Deadlines:

  • First-year applicants who wish to be considered for scholarships should apply for the fall semester, and the application deadline is January 15th.
  • Transfer applicants who wish to be considered for scholarships should plan to apply for the fall semester. Pending availability of funding, scholarships may also be available for transfer applicants planning to begin study in the spring. The deadline for transfer students seeking scholarships is March 1st.

Important: International applicants and their families or sponsors must provide

  • preliminary proof of partial financial resources by the application deadline,
  • application materials and other supporting documents.

This also applies to international applicants who wish to be considered for scholarships.

All applicants must submit one of the following:

  • Official bank statement verifying a minimum account balance of $18,000 (*). The statement must be signed and stamped by a bank official. 2. Affadavit of support submitted by applicant's sponsor that includes an official bank statement. 3. Scholarship letter from a sponsoring organization indicating dates, amount, and terms of scholarship when applying for an F-1 or J-1 visa.

(*) If admitted to American University, students will be required to submit updated proof of funding (up to the estimated total cost of $46,387 for the 2008-2009 academic year depending on the amount of scholarship received, or for the full $46,387 if no scholarship is awarded). Once financial ability has been fully demonstrated, the university will initiate the process for students to request a student visa. See "Obtaining a Student Visa" in the undergraduate international brochure (available shortly) for further information.

Tip: To be considered for admissions and scholarships, please make sure to submit a complete application and all supporting documents, including proof of financial support as stated above, by the application deadline.

Applicants interested in scholarships should plan to apply for admissions for the fall (late August) semester, not spring (early January) semester. Incomplete or late applications will lower your chances of being admitted and considered for scholarships.

See "How to Apply" in the undergraduate international brochure for application guidelines.
