DAAD/OSI Program scholarships for Masters and PhD

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and OSI Scholarship Programs sponsor a joint scholarship program for graduate students in the Balkans and graduate students and junior faculty in the Transcaucasian and Central Asian countries of the former Soviet Union.

The DAAD-OSI Program is designed to improve the framework for teaching and research in humanities and social sciences in the region. At the same time, it promotes network-building among the participants and German academics as a basis for further international exchange activities.

  • Two-year postgraduate MA programs (Aufbaustudiengänge) 
  • Three-year dissertation fellowships for PhD (Promotion)

Eligible Academic Areas

Political Science, Sociology and the Social Sciences, International Relations, Law, European Studies, European Integration, Economics, Economic Relations, Management Science, Education Management, Public Health, Philosophy, and Peace Studies/Conflict Resolution, International Development Studies, Global Political Economy.

Note: Only selected programs are available for MA (Aufbaustudiengänge) degree students. Please see MA Course List 2011-12 attached below.

Applicants currently residing outside of their home countries are not eligible to apply. Law applicants must hold a "Diploma specialista" or master's degree by the time of the commencement of their studies in Germany.


For the 2011-12 academic year, the following candidates from Croatia are eligible to apply:

  • For Masters programme: Applicants holding the equivalent of a bachelor's degree (Final year undergraduate students may submit their applications, but need to acquire their BA diploma before the beginning of their Master program in Germany)
  • For PhD programme: Applicants should hold an MA degree, and should already be in the first or second year of their doctoral programme.

Language Requirement

A good knowledge of German is desirable. Funding for additional language training may be available in German only.

Selection Process

In early 2011, preselected applicants will be invited to an interview held in their home country. The selection committee includes German and Croatian university professors, one DAAD and one OSI representative. In the case of applications for PhD scholarships, the final decision may be conferred to a selection committee in Bonn.

The Test of German (DSH) will be administered by DAAD Lecturers at the interview stage of the competition. Applicants to English language programmes may need to demonstrate English language proficiency.

Financial Support

Participants will receive a monthly stipend, an allowance for travel to and from their host institutions and, if required, a language course (lasting up to 2 months). PhD students are entitled to an additional return trip to their home country in the second year of study.

Please note that within this program, accompanying spouses or children are not eligible for family allowances.

Applicants should apply on the usual DAAD application forms, submitting all necessary documents requested on page 5 of the DAAD Application Form (Antrag auf ein Forschungs-/Studienstipendium) along with 2 Reference Forms.
