Call for doctoral positions at the “School in Social Sciences”

The graduate School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento announces the XXVII cycle of the doctoral programmes in

  1. ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT
  2. LOCAL DEVELOPMENT AND GLOBAL DYNAMICS
  3. SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL RESEARCH

Length: three years

Scientific Areas:

1. Economics and Management

  • Behavioural economics: Foundations of decision making and bounded rationality,Behavioural approaches to economic analysis of individuals, markets and institutions, Experimental economics and methods, Computable economics, Agent-based models and techniques
  • Management: Organizational and social decision making; Organization theory; Innovation management; Social Network Analysis; Simulations for managerial decision making; Management practices and firm performance
  • International economics: Open macroeconomics, growth and development, Trade and firm behaviour in open economies, Emerging economies and commodity markets,Poverty analyses and policies.

2. Local Development and Global Dynamics

  • Systems of local production with particular focus on local factors influence on technological and organizational innovation
  • Enterprises, competitiveness and local development (in cooperation with the University of Deusto)
  • Social economics with particular focus on the role of cooperatives and social enterprises in the local endogenous development;
  • Sustainable tourism and models of local development;
  • Local institutions design and local development (in cooperation with the University of Ljubljana);
  • Human capital and social capital in local development (in cooperation with the University Corvinus of Budapest and the University of Ljubljana);
  • Regional planning, infrastructures and environment.

3. Sociology and Social Research

  • Sociology of science;
  • Social stratification studies; inequality studies (such as gender, class, education, color inequalities);
  • Comparative studies of welfare and labor market regimes, and their evolution;
  • Analysis of social change;
  • Economic sociology, labour studies;
  • Migration studies;
  • Gender studies;
  • Information systems and organizational studies.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applications are invited from candidates, regardless of gender, age and nationality, holding a master degree.

Applications are also invited from students who expect to complete their degree by September 30th 2011. In such cases, admission is "conditional" and applicants are required to send a declaration from their academic supervisor stating that the student is expected to complete the programme beofre the above mentioned deadline.

Applicants having a qualification that has not been officially recognized as equivalent to an Italian degree should submit a request for equivalence to the School.

Applicants holding a non-EU qualification must present their degree certificate along with exams taken and grades, translated and authenticated by an Italian consulate, embassy or diplomatic representative in the country where the degree was issued, and the respective declaration of validity (“Dichiarazione di Valore”) when enrolling.

The application, together with all the attachments required, shall be submitted by June 6th 2011 by 4.00 p.m. in one of the following ways:

Attachments

  1. A photocopy of the applicant’s identity card or passport;
  2. degree certificate or degree self-certification with a list of the examinations passed successfully and the score obtained in each examination.
    Applicants expecting to complete their degree when applying must submit a certification of the enrolment in the course of studies with a list of the examinations passed successfully and scores obtained in each examination. Applicants will be required to send the relevant degree certificate, or a declaration that the degree has been conferred to the Secretariat of the Doctoral School (fax 0039 0461 281348) by the date of the oral exam.
    Applicants with a qualification that has not been officially recognized as equivalent to the Italian degree have to attach a translation into English of the degree certificate with exams and scores obtained, signed under their own responsibility, in order to allow the Doctoral School Committee to assess the equivalence, valid for the only purpose of participating in the selection;

  4. A research proposal in English (max. 3000 words) short abstract (max. 150 words) and bibliography;

Other documents which can be included in the application are:

  1. copies of publications, if any;
  2. any certificate of knowledge of English ((TOEFL, Proficiency etc.);
  3. any other qualifications such as international examinations (GRE or equivalent);
  4. any other useful qualification (e.g.: scientific publications, prizes, study and post-graduate research activities, etc.).
  5. max. 3 reference letters in English or Italian submitted by referees experts in the doctoral research areas of universities or national or international research institutes.

SELECTION
The selection consists of two steps: the assessment of titles and an interview (candidates for Sociology and Social Research will be requested to sit a multiple choice test also). The final ranking is given from the evaluation of the interview. Points for interview:100 To be admitted in the overall ranking candidates shall score at least 60/100.

The short-list (after the assessment of the titles) as well as time and location of the interview will be posted 20 days before the date of the interview. Candidates not resident in Italy who wish to conduct the oral exam in their home country can arrange for a telephone interview. The interview will be taken in English.

PROGRAM OF THE INTERVIEW
The interview will focus on discussion of the research proposal, the candidate’s qualifications and other research topics among those proposed by the Doctoral Programme.

SELECTION COMMITTEE
The Selection Committee will consist of three members chosen among professors and researchers, who are experts in the scientific areas of the Doctoral School. The Committee may also include up to two experts from public and private research centres.

ADMISSION TO THE DOCTORAL SCHOOL
Applicants will be admitted to the Doctoral School according to their order on the final ranking until all available places have been filled.

If a successful applicant withdraws before the beginning of the Programme, the next applicant on the ranking will be admitted. If a successful applicant withdraws or is excluded in the first three-month term of the first year of course, the Doctoral School Committee may decide to fill the vacant place with the next available candidate on the ranking.

ENROLMENT
Admitted applicants are requested to enrol within 15 days of the date of the publication of the final ranking.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are assigned on the basis of the merit-based ranking. The gross annual amount of the scholarships is Euro 13.638,47. The scholarship is conferred for the entire duration of the doctoral programme, conditional upon positive evaluation of the Doctoral School Committee at the end of each year of study.
