The Research Center “Humanities, Modernity, Globalization” at Jacobs University Bremen invites applications for a PhD Stipend in Art History.

Topics of research will include the history and theory of 20th Century art. A focus on artist networks, abstract art, or intercultural aspects is particularly welcome. The successful applicant will pursue a dissertation project on a selected topic of 20th Century art history in the Intercultural Humanities Graduate Program at Jacobs University and be expected to also participate in collaborative research, assist in project management, fund raising, and third-party funding applications, and contribute to the organization of conferences and educational programs.

The PhD grant amounts to 800 Euros per month for a period of 12 months (the grant is tax free). Renewal is possible. The anticipated starting date is February 1, 2013.

Historical transformations, new literary, visual, and more broadly speaking cultural dynamics in modern and contemporary periods furnish the central themes around which the research center Humanities, Modernity, Globalization is built. Their faculty share the conviction that key concepts in the humanities are decisive in constituting as well as explaining the meaning and scope of our time. They are at the very heart of attempts by individuals and societies to describe and interpret the physical and metaphorical territories of new forms of cultural existence.

The objects of ‘humanistic’ study (at Jacobs University, these include: languages, religion, literature, law, arts, and media and their technological saturation) are centrally and often actively involved in cultural dynamics. It must be understood that no concept of culture as a homogeneous entity is assumed under this scheme. Cultures are seen as mutually overlapping and fluid, but often problematically homogenized and antagonized ensembles of discursive and performative practices.
 

Eligibility

The successful applicant will hold a Masters degree or equivalent in art history or a related field.

S/he will be responsible, self-motivated, and enjoy working in an international academic environment. In addition to excellent writing and presentation skills, organization and management skills and experience in project management are essential. Fluency in English and German and good working knowledge of a third language is expected.
