Biotransformations of Trace elements in Aquatic Systems

Early-Stage Training (EST) Fellowships, funded by the European Union under the Sixth Framework Marie Curie Actions.
BIOTRACS has funding for 12 PhD studentships (3 year Fellowships) and 6 short visiting Fellowships (3 month Fellowships) for the period 2005 to 2008. All PhD studentship have now been filled and we are considering applications for the three month visiting Fellowships which will start in 2006 onwards.

Three Month Visiting Fellows
We are currently processing all applications that arrived in time for the deadline at the end of 2005 but we are still accepting applicants for 3 month visiting Fellowships to taken up any time in 2005 and 2007. Applicants in the area of glaciology and organic biogeochemistry are particularly welcome. The 3 month visiting Fellows will spend time in 1 centre relevant to their research interests. They will be trained in research and analytical skills as appropriate to their backgrounds and future research needs.

Eligible applicants will be engaged in postgraduate study in a discipline relevant to BIOTRACS. Applicants should contact a BIOTRACS partner directly to discuss feasibility of the proposed work and the timing of the training period. Applications should be made to Dr Nicola McCardle, the project administrator at the NOC. Applications for the 3 month Fellowships are still being considered in 2006, particularly in the areas of glaciology, and organic geochemistry, please check your eligibility before contacting a BIOTRACS partner to discuss the proposed work in detail.

Eligibility and Conditions
Read this carefully before making an application
The Fellowships are intended for researchers at an early stage of their career; they offer three years of funded full-time PhD study or 3 months of funded training with generous living, travel and mobility allowances.

The living allowance will be paid as a taxable salary to the Fellows. The value is approximately £24 000 (£17-£18,000 after tax, national insurance etc) per year for the duration of the Fellowship (pro rata for 3 month Fellows). A generous mobility allowance (approximately £5000 sterling per year)is made to all Fellows and a one off payment is made to 3 Year Fellows for career exploration. Details will be dependent on individual circumstances and will be discussed with successful applicants.

Fellows will be appointed as employees of the University where they are registered for their PhD award and like other staff they will be provided with working space, use of a computer and full access to the library and other University resources. Fellows will be issued with a job description and employment contact which will detail the nature of their relationship with the University.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following criteria (note this information is for indicative guidance only - for comprehensive details please refer to the EST Handbook):

-you can be a national of any country, but normally no more than 30% of researcher months per site may be allocated to non-EU nationals;
If you are a UK citizen you must have lived and worked/studied in a country outside the EU Member and Associated States for at least four of the last five years immediately prior to your appointment;
If you are a UK citizen as well as the citizen of another country (dual nationality) you must not have lived, worked or studied in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 5 years immediately prior to your appointment;
If you are not a UK citizen you must not have lived, worked or studied in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately prior to your appointment;
you must have obtained a degree which entitles you to undertake doctoral studies but not have obtained a PhD qualification or equivalent;
you should not have had more than 4 years full-time research experience since obtaining a qualification that gives access to doctoral studies;
the subject area of your qualifications must be relevant to BIOTRACS.

Check your eligibility before making an application
Candidates whose first language is not English must demonstrate that their English language skills are sufficient to meet the specific demands of their study. Candidates will normally be expected to have obtained either the British Council IELTS with a score of 6.0 (with not less than 5.5 in Listening & Reading and 5.0 in Speaking & Writing skills) or paper based TOEFL with a score of 600 (with 4.0 on the Test of Written English TWE) or computer based TOEFL with a score of 220 (with an 'essay' rating of 4.0).
