The Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) is looking for a

PhD working on Process Mining Techniques
in the Privacy Compliance and Enforcement (PriCE) project

Electronic data that are incresingly generated and used in our society (e.g., electronic health records, financial data, demographic data used in eGoverment) need to be protected. The EU data protection legislation imposes very stringent requirements on the collection, processing and disclosure of personal data, and empowers users to control the access/usage of their data. In the project AIS will collaborate with the Security (SEC) group at TU/e. In the PriCE project we aim to develop innovative privacy compliance and enforcement techniques based on cross-fertilizations between security and process mining.

The AIS group is one of the leading groups in BPM working on exciting new techniques such as process mining (www.processmining.org), process configuration, and BPM technology. The work resulted in the development of the ProM framework that is widely used in industry and serves as a platform for new process mining techniques used by research groups all over the globe. ProM and related research will be used as a starting point.

The Privacy Compliance and Enforcement (PriCE) project will employ two PhD candidates (one on security and one on process mining) that will collaborate while being supported by several staff members from both groups. The PriCE project is part of NWO’s Cyber Security program which focuses on the development of products, services and knowledge for the security of the digital society. It is part of the Dutch Government’s National Cyber Security Strategy (NCSS). It is aimed at combatting potential cyber disturbances for citizens, industry and government in the Netherlands.


The PhD focusing on process mining techniques for security will be working in the AIS group under the supervision of prof.dr. Wil van der Aalst. The Architecture of Information Systems group is doing research in the area of process modeling and analysis. The group is rated as one of the leading computer science groups in the Netherlands and TU/e often seen as the epicenter of BPM and process mining research. The group uses formal methods such as Petri nets to design, analyze, and implement dynamic systems. The group is well-versed in workflow management, process mining, and process verification.

Requirements:

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • a solid background in Computer Science and interested in process mining;
  • knowledge of data mining and machine learning and/or process modeling and formal methods;
  • good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing;
  • moreover, candidates are expected to realize research ideas in terms of software.

Note that we are looking for candidates that really want to make a difference and like to work on things that have a practical relevance. Therefore, we expect people to be able to develop software in such a way that it can be used in industrial settings.
