Internship Guidelines
UNU Office at the United Nations, New York

Established by the UN General Assembly in 1973, the United Nations University (UNU) is an international community of scholars engaged in research, postgraduate training and knowledge dissemination to promote the United Nations' aims of peace and progress. Activities focus mainly on Peace and Governance and Environment and Sustainable Development. The University operates a worldwide network of training centers, with headquarters in Tokyo. The UNU Office at the United Nations, New York liaises with the UN Secretariat, the Permanent Missions, American academia and foundations by showcasing the work of UNU, particularly through public events organized in the UN Secretariat and by political and diplomatic linking, as well as by academic interplay between UNU and the academic world.

United Nations University Office to the United Nations New York takes on interns twice a year (from February to August, and from August to February). It is currently recruiting interns for August 2006 to February 2007. Please note that the internships are unpaid.

The Internship will mainly consist of the following tasks;
• Dissemination/communication: Showcasing the work of UNU, particularly through public events organised in the UN Secretariat.
• Political and diplomatic linking: Helping to make UNU a stakeholder and full-fledged partner of the UN system.
• Academic interplay between UNU, the UN system, diplomatic missions to the UN and US academia: Helping to secure the intellectual and institutional voice of UNU in the UN system, with the diplomatic missions to the UN and academia in North America.
• Fundraising: Being in contact with foundations and similar organizations in the New York-Washington D.C. areas, as part of the UNU-ONY fundraising role.
• Administrative: Performing personnel, UNU administrative, procurement, and finance-related tasks.
• Technology: Updating the UNU-ONY website; Upgrading the office’s IT tools.

Qualifications required:
- Knowledge of at least two official UN languages preferable
- Good writing skills (for documents, reports, summaries)
- Good analytical skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
- Ability to work with and in a team
