PhD in Climate Technology and Finance

Deadline: 28.07.2023.

PhD in Climate Technology and Finance
100%, Zurich, fixed-term

ETH Zurich’s Climate Finance and Policy Group (CFP) together with ETH Zurich’s Energy and Technology Policy Group (EPG) is seeking a doctoral candidate in climate finance and policy. We are interdisciplinary research groups, investigating options for public policy and for private actors to accelerate investments in new low-carbon technologies, particularly in the energy sector.

Job description
Mitigating dangerous climate change requires a fundamental transition of global economies. To this end, capital flows have to be re-directed from high-carbon to low-carbon technologies, and particularly investments in low-carbon infrastructure for energy and transport services have to increase rapidly. Accordingly, many OECD countries increase public investment in such infrastructure, though the desirable balance between public and private investment is often not systematically considered. In the context of an international research project, you will analyze to which extent new, climate-compatible infrastructure should be realized through private or public finance channels, taking into account technology- and sector-inherent determinants. Method-wise, the PhD project will draw on quantitative empirical analyses, develop a conceptual framework, and potentially engage in scenario analyses for policy advice.
