Announcement follows

The financial support element of our First-Generation Scholars scheme is targeted to help students who come from relatively low income families. We have set the eligibility threshold for financial support at the highest level possible i.e. students whose family income is up to £42,611. This support from Sussex will be additional to the loans and grants available to students directly from Government.

Summary of benefits:

First Year: a financial package involving a £1,000 cash bursary, plus either (a) a £2,000 (approx. £50/week) rent reduction for University-managed accommodation*; or (b) a £2,000 fee waiver.

* In special relevant circumstances, we will also consider providing a family support package or (subject to Disability Support Assessment rules) a disability-related benefit in kind to the equivalent value.

Subsequent years: a £1,000 cash bursary support for each year of study attendance.

Type of award

UG

Award amount

Year 1: £1K cash bursary plus either a £2K rent reduction or a £2K fee waiver. Subsequent years: £1K cash bursary.

Eligibility

Students must qualify for 'Home' (UK) fee status, be joining undergraduate full-time programmes from the academic year 2013/14 onwards, and have a family income level validated by Student Finance England that qualifies them to receive UK government grant support (i.e. family income under £42,611).

Students studying on the BA Social Work course are not eligible for this scholarship.

Procedure

Students wishing to be considered for the First-Generation Scholars Scheme should apply for UK government student support in the normal way, in parallel to applying to Sussex via UCAS. During the UCAS admissions cycle your data will automatically be shared with the University, enabling us to assess your eligibility on the basis of family income.

All first year students who are living in halls will automatically gain the rent reduction, all other first year students will recieve the fee waiver.

Please note that this process depends on you agreeing to share your family income information with the University, at the time you apply for government student support.

Timetable

Your application will be automatically processed by Student Finance England and the University of Sussex. You will be contacted in late August / early September with confirmation of the award.
