PhD Grant in Finland available - Foundation for European Forest Research

The Foundation for European Forest Research offers a PhD research grant and welcomes the successful candidate to do research at the European Forest Institute (EFI) in Joensuu, Finland. The research topic should fit within the research and especially within the four research programmes of the EFI. The choice of the university for the PhD degree is not restricted.

Description of the scholarship

The awarded grant is 16,000 euro per annum (full time scholarship). In addition, the grant holder will be awarded with a 1,000 euro travelling allowance. The grant holder will also be assisted by EFI staff on matters such as housing and how to get started in Finland.

He or she is invited to do research within one of the EFI research programmes and groups.
The core part of the research work should be conducted at the EFI headquarters in Joensuu, Finland. The call is open for all interested parties, who are qualified to proceed with PhD studies at some internationally recognized university. The research work carried out within the scholarship should be part of a PhD thesis or form the whole PhD thesis.

The applicant shall state beside the research plan how he plans to obtain the PhD degree and how the scholarship research relates to the degree. The choice of the university is not restricted as long as it is an internationally recognized one. The Foundation and the EFI can assist the candidates to make contact to the University of Joensuu to explore the PhD opportunities there.

A scholarship is awarded for one year at a time. However, the aim of the scholarship is to facilitate PhD research and thus the Foundation is committed to continue the scholarship period on annual basis up to 3-4 years, providing that the research work is progressing as planned and that the Foundation has the necessary financial resources available. When funding is applied for a continued scholarship, a report on the progress and the use of funds of the research project has to be attached.

Selection criteria

  • Scientific quality and feasibility of the research plan.
  • Relevance of the proposed research work to the EFI research strategy and EFI research programmes. The interested candidates are allowed to contact the EFI programme managers (preferably by E-mail) in order to obtain detailed information of the research work carried out at the EFI.
  • Previous studies and possible scientific merits of the candidate.
  • Quality of the overall plan made for the PhD degree.
