The Darling Foundry international residency program

The Darling Foundry, located in Old Montreal (Quebec, Canada), is an alternative visual arts complex with an outstanding architectural design. The Darling Foundry provides various opportunities for research, creation, production, and exhibition. Its multifaceted spaces provide room for private studios, residency studios, technical workshops, gallery spaces, a restaurant and offices over a 3500 m2 surface.

The Canada Council for the Arts offers an international residency program at the Darling Foundry for foreign professional visual artists from outside of Canada. Two artists are awarded four-month residencies. Each resident receives a grant, which contributes towards living expenses, travel fees and production costs.

A studio measuring 100 m2 with separate living accommodation and common living spaces are provided. Artists have access to wood and metal workshops, with technical assistance if need be. In addition, each artist is given the option to participate in open studio events, studio visits by art professionals, networking events, and excursions.

Resident artists receive a grant amount of $18,000 CDN which applies to the resident’s expenses.

The grant is allocated as follows:

• Allowance for travel costs (maximum of $2,000 CDN);
• Subsistence fees ($8,000 CDN);
• Production costs ($8,000 CDN).

The committee ensures fair representation and consideration of artistic specialization, gender, Aboriginal peoples and cultures from around the world.

The Darling Foundry offers two time frames for this residency: January 15 to May 15, 2010 and May 20 to September 20, 2010.

Applications are evaluated by a committee of experienced arts professionals based on:

• The artistic quality of the applicant’s work;
• The potential impact of the residency on the applicant’s career
• The contribution to the Canadian arts community.

Applicants interested in the residency program may submit a complete application form including support materials to the address below. We will not accept applications postmarked after the deadline date, incomplete, or submitted by fax or email.

APPLICATION AND SUPPORT MATERIALS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN JUNE 1, 2009, TO:
