The Jennings Randolph Program for International Peace awards Senior Fellowships to enable outstanding scholars, policymakers, journalists, and other professionals from around the world to conduct research for up to 10 months at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. on important issues concerning international conflict and peace.

Priority is given to proposals that promise to make a timely contribution to the understanding and resolution of ongoing and emerging international conflicts. USIP is especially interested in proposals addressing problems of the Muslim world, post-war reconstruction and peacebuilding and stability operations in Iraq and elsewhere, and responses to terrorism and political violence. However, proposals in all fields are welcome.

Eligibility Requirement

  • Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States
  • Must have completed all requirements for the degree except the dissertation by the commencement of the award
  • Must be active professionals or senior scholars in the field. Must be eligible for J-1 Visa and must return to home country upon completion of the fellowship
  • Fellowships are open to citizens of any country

Number of Awards: Approximately 12 fellowships per year.

Areas of Study: Conflict Management, Peace Studies

Average Award Amount: The program attempts to match the recipient’s earned income during the year preceding the fellowship, up to a maximum of $80,000 for ten months.

Award Coverage: The Senior Fellowship Award includes living stipend, office, part-time research assistant, travel and partial health insurance coverage. The Dissertation Fellowship award may be used to support writing or field research.

Award Duration: 10 months
