Master of Science in Cartography

The new International Master program (Master of Science, M.Sc.) in CARTOGRAPHY is a cooperation of :

  • Technische Universität München (TUM), Department of Cartography
  • Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien), Research Group Cartography
  • Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), Institute for Cartography

The primary goal of CARTOGRAPHY Master's Program is to educate future engineers in Cartography in combination with Geoinformatics and prepare them for a scientific or industrial career in Cartography. Students gain fundamental knowledge in analyzing and visualizing geographic data.

The unique curriculum taught by the three cooperating Universities TUM, TU Vienna and TU Dresden distinguishes CARTOGRAPHY from other master's programs in related fields.

Job perspectives

Job possibilities ensue not only in their home country, but also worldwide. Degree holders in cartography and geoinformatics can work for example at universities or research institutes e.g. DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt - German Aerospace Center), as well as for private cartographic / GIS companies like United Maps, ESRI, Siemens, Intergraph etc. Cartographers as mapmakers work in large government agencies or for well known atlas publishers.

Tuition and enrollment fees
The TUM charges a tuition fee for the 1st semester of about 500 EUR.
The TU Vienna charges a tuition fee for the 2nd semester 363 EUR (except for EU/EEA/Swiss nationals).
For the 3rd semesterat TU Dresden, there is no tuition fee.
For the 4th semester (Master's Thesis) there is no tuition fee.

At TUMthere is an enrollment fee of 42 EUR.
At TU Vienna student's union fee is about 20 EUR. (+ extra 42 EUR)
At TU Dresden there is an enrollment fee of 42 EUR.

Admission Requirements
Applications are open to candidates with an above-average Bachelor's degree or its equivalent (from a recognized university) in engineering, natural science or a related field (e.g.: cartography, geodesy, geoinformation, informatics, geography, geosciences, etc.) If English is not your native language, nor the official language of tuition of your previous course of study, a TOEFL, an IELTS or an examination of the Cambridge main suit of English is required for non-native English speaking applicants.
